July 15, 200520 yr Author after fleece, how many layers of mat should i add to make it strong enough?and instead of body filler, could i put a thin layer of foam under the vinyl to make it smooth?
July 15, 200520 yr 3-5 yep. also sand down the fiberglas really really good, get it smooth, take body filler and run a really thin layer to fill up all the holes, uneven parts, light sanding, then you can put some thin foam, or there even is some vinyl with a thick backing to it.
July 15, 200520 yr after fleece, how many layers of mat should i add to make it strong enough?and instead of body filler, could i put a thin layer of foam under the vinyl to make it smooth? There is no set amount of layers you should use. People break it down to a number or thickness, but you really can't. I'd done many with nothing but the layer of fleece and a thin layer of body filler with absolutely no problems. If you don't need the extra layers, why do the work. Do this instead.Take your thumb and press randomly around the outside of the pod. If there is a spot that flexes, put some more material there. There is more pressure exerted by your thumb in that one spot than even a SUBWOOFER could provide. Surely that would be fine with a midbass driver. It's all about curves with glass. I've had subwoofer enclosures with only 2 layers of very thin glass. As for the vinyl. unless your enclosure is super smooth and does not have any low or high spots, I suggest always using a foam behind the vinyl. It's not like carpet, and like paint, it will show quite a bit of imperfections. The foam will totally alleviate this problem. Just do a light finish layer, add the foam, vinyl, and be done.
July 15, 200520 yr Author thanx for all the help guys, very much appreciated i'll try to get pix by tonite, gonna go work on it some in a bit.
July 15, 200520 yr Author theyre aimed at about the outer ear of the opposite seat. audiolife told me to aim them 15-20 degrees up, and no more than 33 degrees out, so thats what i was trying to go for. not too big of a deal, they're lp'd pretty low.madisound just shipped out my grills too, hopefully they fit. for $30, they better fit! they're scan-speak grills for the 18W, which is a 7" mid so i hope i'm ok.gonna get to resining tomorrow, maybe a layer or 2 of mat if time permits. any suggestions?
