Posted July 25, 200520 yr well guys, i'll be moving into my dorm in less than a month now so i need to figure out what to do about a systemi have a Yamaha RX-500U for the receiver, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...eName=WDVW&rd=1 says it's 50wpc x 2 but i know it has 4 channels and they're 6 ohm stable stereo/12 ohm stable monomy plan was to use the rear 2 channels to hook up a PE 250w plate amp with the speaker level inputs and run that to my RL-i8s at 4 ohms, i won't have my car so i might as well put the subs to good use, i need suggestions for box size and tuning frequencyand then, i dont know what to do about my mids/highs, i want you guys' input on thisi have these to work with:andbut as you can see both have issues and both are larger than i want these to bei can use any of the parts from these thoughi'm not looking to spend too much on parts, less than 100 would be nice, and i can build any enclosures/crossovers as long as i have plansi'm just looking for a good clear soundthanks for the help
July 25, 200520 yr Author from frosty as usualhttp://www.vikash.info/audio/W3-871S/ya, i saw that but they can only handle 12won a side note, shielded drivers would be niceGet some headphones umm.. no thanks
July 25, 200520 yr If You are crampped, run 1 8" or even a pair isobaric (but it's a challenge to tune low in such a small box).as far as mids/tweets... I've been looking around for a decent bookshelf setup myself. havent found anything yet... so not much help there. I'll say with the receiver You've got - just a 3.5" midrange & 1" domed tweet. the mids I've looked at want something like 0.4' ported ~150hz. iirc.<250 / 250-3500 / 3500+ is simple enough.OT: Why no ride while in school??-Nick
July 25, 200520 yr http://www.icixsound.com/vb/showthread.php?t=14839'Twas an article about building satellites with 4" mids. Links to a Parts Express project, scroll down for pics. Madisound's Sledgling kit comes to mind, though it's about double your $100 budget http://madisound.com/sled.htmlI can't really offer any advice from personal experience on small speakers, because I was running mondo-huge 3way monitors, and loved it The advantage of that is you control what gets played on your side of the hall...and you hope everyone in your listening area likes the same thing you do
July 25, 200520 yr ISUX is still useful for some things even if I only check out the home audio section...
July 25, 200520 yr http://www.creativesound.ca/details.php?model=FR125SBGPretty close to your budget, and they come with pre-cut baffles & grilles Or, if you are any good at crossover/cabinet design, you could pick up a pair of Dayton RS 6" or 7" mids, the Dayton RS tweeter, or something from Morel or Seas, and build your own for right around $100 in parts.
July 25, 200520 yr The FR125's are out of stock, for now anyway...but the WR125 paired with a silk tweet would kick ass. Exodus Audio sells kits of two-way monitors like that, could be an option.
July 25, 200520 yr Gah this thread reminds me I have to move back to school in a month ohh well i'm just taking my home theater in a box with me haha
July 25, 200520 yr Author oh man, have i got some reading to dosince im trying to keep this fairly small, i think i'll just do a mid/tweet set upand Nick, I'm going to put the 8s under my bed (should have atleast a foot under there) and no ride because my parents wont let me have it at the dorm and i kind of agree with them
July 25, 200520 yr Gah this thread reminds me I have to move back to school in a monthYup, me too..only this time, I have an apartment for all my chit and no ride because my parents wont let me have it at the dorm and i kind of agree with themDepends on the campus and surrounding area...I know here at Tech, having a vehicle was really useful (as most of the shopping places weren't within walking distance), but having a residential parking permit was a major PITA. Parking close to the dorm was a game of cat-and-mouse with the parking nazi's. Now that I'm living off campus and commuting, the situation is a lot better...

Now that I'm living off campus and commuting, the situation is a lot better...ASU is pertty compact campus actually so i'm not worried about that at all
July 25, 200520 yr The PE Audax TM is probably a good option for price and size plus the drivers are on a good sale now. This may also be around $100 after crossovers:http://www.zaphaudio.com/audio-speaker13.html
July 25, 200520 yr Author alright, i think i have a plani like the look of this: http://www.partsexpress.com/pdf/flyer05/016_pe5d.indd.pdfbut i was wondering if it would be better if i went with a larger midthe tweet i'll be using: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.c...tnumber=276-102and then which mid would be the best to use with it, any of these are in my price range4"(what's used in the above link): http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.c...tnumber=296-1455.25": http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.c...tnumber=296-1556.5": http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.c...tnumber=296-165i plan to do a simple bandpass filter on the mid and a HPF on the tweet, frequencies and slopes to be determined after i decide which mid

July 26, 200520 yr I believe I stated my point....but since you are a doof.... you won't get these done before you move out of the dorm.
