Things should be more simple now that you don't have to stick to a minimum power rating, that's a dumbass rule.

i say build a ported box for the subs you have now and then see if you want anymore after that. could save you money, and if you still want more it will give you more time to save for a new sub(s) :)

I didn't mean it in a bad way. Its great now that I know I can go for a greater selection of sub woofers, its just that I thought I had started to settle on one in my budget and power range. Speaking of my budject it might go up to maybe 400 for a sub and box nothing for sure though

so there's no disadvantage to having an amp with a lower RMS than the sub? I thought it might not perform as well with less power.

Like if you were to compare a little import car to a Ferrari but you only had a 200 hp engine, the import wouldn't be terribly fast but it would be zippy and kinda fun but if you put that engine into the Ferrari you'd just be able to get around.

But if I'm wrong, what are the disadvantages?

wrong metaphor, its more like buying a Ferrari and driving the speed limit... u never push the car very hard (aka the sub could take more power) but its hell of alot nicer to drive then a Corolla. (aka the higher quality sub produces better sound at the same power, compared to a cheaper woofer)

I see, I guess I'm taking another look around at subs. Been eying the Fi Q 15"

Just FYI, I had my 15" SSA Icon sub on a 650 watts rms amp (@ 4 ohms) and it was sounding soooo good with the proper box!

It is in the same league as the Fi Q.

The Sundown Z15 v1 was on sale for about $ 200 lately : take a look.

It's better to run a 12" in a big enough box rather than a 15" in a too small box.

Good luck

I would put it into the recommended size box probably on the bigger side.

Thanks denim, not scared to admit I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to car audio, but the knowledge I've gained over the last few days is infinitely greater than what I knew before although it is still nothing compared to most of you guys here :)
