I prefer pioneer, but I have not tested the clarion

Pioneer, because im biased and i dont like alpine or clarion :D

Denon, if u can find one that is :). I would also recomend Eclipse, may look plasticky, but it's a very good HU, it 'eclipse' pioneer and alpine literaly, besides F1 and ODR.

The new ones are also ugly as sin

Nah, your ugly, that Eclipse is a beauty when installed. The ergonomics take a day or two to get used to, but worth it IMO. I loves my new one. I have the built in timing, x-overs, 10 band parametric eq, everything I was looking for to go active. I have to agree with above, Eclipse, Pioneer, Alpine.....in that order.

I'd go with the Clarion or the Alpine. I've owned a Clarion Screen, the 745 to be exact, and LOVED it. It was an amazing screeen. Next choice would be Alpine...don't like the Pio that much :(
