So i've read on numerous threads that the RE box calculator tunes a tad bit high. Personally, i'm a noob when it comes to making boxes so this RE calculator is just a great tool!! I use it mixed with Win Isd to make my box! i just really wish win isd had a slot port option So for people like me, and many other box designing noobs the RE calculator is awesome!! Its free, easy to use, you can see what changing port dimensions do to your tuning. So, does the Re calculator ALWAYS tune high? is it the same everytime? I'm curious because i'm desiging, or trying to, a box for my friend for his first gen 15" icon which i purchased for him.

Also, on a side note, when designing a box, how far should the edge of the basket be from the edge of the box?

It doesnt matter how close the basket is to the side. There is no specific measurment as to where it should be as long as you sub box is made to your liking. I have heard the RE box calculator is off too. So I wouldnt use it but to get a somewhat idea how my box would be.

I've seen it a few hertz to >10 hertz , tuning isnt the only problem I have with it either. It can give you false dimensions and screw up your box if your not paying attention. And WinISD can calculate slot ports, just go to the "vents" tab and click on the port shape to change it from a circle to a square.

Not hard to add half port width to the length, as it doesn't take out port volume.

Bromo, i know this may be sad, but i don't fully understand what you're saying about using the square port to do the slot port. Would you mind explaining that so a 10 year old, or me, would understand? I would greatly appreciate it!!

When dealing with a slot port there are two different port lengths, effective length and physical length.

Effective length = The length that the box "sees". Because in a slot port it uses 3 of the enclosures walls and only one wall to set the port length, when the wall used to set the length ends the others keep going to make up the rest of the box. When the air travels through the port it will "stick" to the remaining 3 walls for a little bit after the physical wall ends making the port seem longer then its physical length.

Physical length = Actual length measured down the center of the port.

Basically to do it with winISD set your box parameter how you would like them. The port length it gives you would be the effective length and it is generally common to subtract half the port width to get the physical port length.

So your port is 4"w X 14"T and it tells you that your port should be 26" long, subtract 2" to get your physical port length of 24".

What do you mean? When you click on the circle under vents to change it to a square, it gives you two input boxes for port area dimensions. You can put 2 and 10 in either of them or whatever, you don't have to keep both the same.

If you're talking about using one side of the box and calling that a slot port, well then you still could say that a square port could be a slot port because you can use one side of the box for a square port too. In that case Bromo talked about how to adjust.

torres calculator is the best one i've used so far and it is dead on accurate with the tuning.

I have never had it give me an accurate result.
