Hey what's up. I just got into the car audio scene because I just got a '06 Scion tC and want to upgrade the sound. In my old car I had an Eclipse head unit, MBQuart components in front and back, and an MTX amp powering it on. I didn't do much research...just went to CarToys and picked out what i liked in my price range. In my tC I plan on dropping a sub...so I've been doing a good deal of research through forums. I found this forum when a member referred me to it. I want to gain knowledge through you guys and share whatever I have learned myself on the way. So far I have picked out an amp but I'm still having a hard time figuring out what sub I should get. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Other than that, I'm 19 go to UT Austin, parents live in Ft Worth. I was once studying for a mechanical engineering degree but I now hate college and see it as a waste of time as much much much more money can be made through investing, stocks, and the like. I'm also into the whole Home Theater scene...I just purchased a projector and will be getting an audio system setup. I also play World of Warcraft but lately haven't because I got a job finally and well it gets boring after you've done most everything in the game.

This forum doesn't seem like the other ones that are plagued with idiots that would rather flame than help each other out. I look foward to being a part of this community. Anyways it's 4:30 am and I need to sleep :ohsnap:

Looks like you have somewhat of an idea on what you want for your Scion.

I think 2 members on this site have them aswell.

For a sub we need to know the following:

What kind of music do you listen to

What type of sound do you like: SPL or SQ

Do you have an amp already

What is your budget.

Answer those and we might be able to find you something sutable for your needs.

I listen to metal, rap, hard rock, alternative, trance(mostly progressive), r&b. SQ matters a lot to me...but I'm a basshead and want to be able to feel the bass pounding in my lungs when I want. Whenever I look at a sub I make sure it can hit atleast 20Hz if not 16 Hz. But it looks like I will have to compromise in car audio as those subs usually need a much bigger box than the 2 cu ft that I want to limit my box to. So I would like the bass to be atleast 30Hz or below at -3dB. But will compromise more if I realllly need to. I have a Pioneer Premier PRS-X720 amp. It's rated at 400W RMS @ 4 ohm but its birthsheet has it rated at a little over 800@ RMS @ 4 ohm. It is very common for the amp to have double its rated output. I don't want to run the amp at max so I'm trying to limit the wattage I use to 700. My budget...well for the time being I'm trying to spend less than $200 on the sub and I dunno $50 on a box. I want a 12" sub...I don't have the room for a 15".

I spent a lot of time on sounddomain, elite car audio, car audio, and car audio forums gathering information. The subs I considered are:

IDMAX

OZ Audio Matrix Elite

Resonant Engineering SE

Infinity Perfect 12.1

Dayton MKIII

Dayton High Fidelity

Elemental Designs OV line

W3

Alpine Type R

Kicker Comp

O Audio TC2+

HSU ASW-1203

Soundsplinter rl-p

The subs I am still considering:

Dayton MKIII

Dayton High Fidelity

Soundsplinter rl-p

IDMAX

OZ ME

Alpine Type R

I am leaning heavily towards the Dayton HF...but slowly but surely going to the rl-p. I'm a very number based persons as I can't really hear the subs and 97% of the people I've talked to haven't heard the Daytons...

I'm hoping to find someone that has heard the Dayton MKIII and/or HF AND the rl-p. That will help me make my decision a great deal.

The OZ matrix and ID MAX are almost the same sub.

I would go with the RL-p simply because of the GREAT customer service that Mike offers and it also requires a fairly small encolsure compared to its rivals.

No music will play as low as 20hz so I dont see why thats such a big deal to you. The SSF will cut that frequency anyways.

So is 20Hz just a Home Theater thing? How low should I aim for then for the lowest possible extension in music(well rap I suppose)?

Welcome to SSA!!!

Rock is usually in the 35-45 range and 35 is really being generious

Rap is usually in the 30-40 range

Bass music is ~20+ usually

It really depends on what your box preferences are. 20hz in a sealed box is no prob (depending on the setup)

20hz ported can be a problem if you get too far below the tuning frequency.

I still like the IDmax, RL-P, or SI mag

Any of the 3 would make an excellent SQL sub.

I think the SI Mag is a lil out of the budget.....no ?

The dude I'm buying my amp from is also selling a D2 for less than $200. I think I'm gonna pick it up. I've been reading about the D2 and researching and it looks sweeeeeet.

Thanks for the welcome. What exactly do you mean by Bass music?

:hay:

Welcome aboard.

Justin probably means music like Bass Mekanik, Euphoric Midnight Bass, et al...stuff designed to give your subbass setup a workout.
