Just when I think I found a sub...people throw new subs in my face. I'm considering the Mag D2, RL-P, and A/D/S 312rs/4. I know they're all great subs. But which would be best for me?

This is what I posted in my Newbie Sign IN thread:

I listen to metal, rap, hard rock, alternative, trance(mostly progressive), r&b. SQ matters a lot to me...but I'm a basshead and want to be able to feel the bass pounding in my lungs when I want. Whenever I look at a sub I make sure it can hit atleast 20Hz if not 16 Hz. But it looks like I will have to compromise in car audio as those subs usually need a much bigger box than the 2 cu ft that I want to limit my box to. So I would like the bass to be atleast 30Hz or below at -3dB. But will compromise more if I realllly need to. I have a Pioneer Premier PRS-X720 amp. It's rated at 400W RMS @ 4 ohm but its birthsheet has it rated at a little over 800@ RMS @ 4 ohm.

I am a bit biased here and can only give my opinion on one of the drivers as it's the only one I have experience with.

With that being said, you're enlcosure is going to play the biggest role here. Your music preferences aren't exactly full of material that will play as low as you need/want. A smaller sealed enclosure(1-1.5 cubes) seems perfect for you. Lowend output may suffer a bit, but when introduced into the vehicular environment, the transfer function will raise your F3 considerably.

Being you have relatively low power, you may want to increase the enclosure size for increased efficiency, but you may get a little more slop and tradeoff some accuracy. Just the nature of the beast.

I don't know how the RL-p, nor the A/D/S fare will fare with 400 watts, but I can tell you that my new Mag is a killer in 1 cube sealed and 250 watts. Now, that is in a standard cab pickup truck, so my results would not be as striking if loaded into a trunk.

Give us some more info on the vehicle type, and a budget as well.

I think the MAG is the most versitale, it can take the most power and the most abuse, and seems to be flexiable on box sizes, it did very nice for me at approx 400 watts, but the price is higher

the RL-p is an excellent sub, at a great price, but it is more of a ported box sub, SQ on this sub is top notch also, but only comes in dual 4 right now, unless you find a used one, I believe effendi has one in the classified section on here,

the A/D/S is a solid sub, I did not get to test it the way I was able to the previous two, it is more so a SQ sub that does not need much power,

so anyway, I would personally knock the A/D/S off the list, (and keep in mind I am an old A/D/S fan) you need to figure out if you want to spend the money for the MAG because (if new only) it is probably your best fit, if you want to track down a used RL-p D2 you could still have an awesome set up, either way SoundSplinter and StereoIntegrity have the best customer service going

It's goin in a Scion tC. I don't want to spend more than $200 on the sub. I found a used SI D2 for $170. Would it be worth the price difference to get a new D2?

the older driver is very nice, and that is a great price,

but if you want one of the best out now, and dont mind a little extra, its worth it IMO

i agree....i'd knock the A/D/S off the list as well. nothing against them, but SI and SS are hard to beat.

that said, as was mentioned by denim, the new RL-p's only come in d4, so you'll have to find a used d2. again as was mentioned, effendi has a slightly used one in the classifieds here. IMO, one of the best sql subs going. i run mine in 1.25ft^3 sealed (most of the time)and love it to death (off a rated 750wrms). currently it's in 2.5ft^3 ported, tuned to 28hz, getting 1200wrms. it's niiiiiice!

while i have no experience with the old MAGs, the new ones are another top notch SQL woofer. like the RL-p, they will drop low. and get loud. as to whether the new ones are worth the extra money over the old ones, well, i'd say that with so many previous generation MAG owners , who have bought the new MAG, so easily seperated from their old ones, tells me that the new ones are indeed that much better.

also, like tirefryr stated, your enclosure is going to play a big role. a sealed box, in the 1.25-1.5ft^3 range, with the power you have would be the enclosure i'd suggest. if you crave a bit more output, i'd suggest a 1.75-2ft^3 ported affair, tuned in the 30-34hz range. that will gain you some ouput, get plenty low and maintain a really nice level of sq.

Both are great subs but I prefer the Mag but thats just my opinion and this was an older mag the new one's are suppose to be better .
