I'm trying to get rid of my Type-R because it just doesn't sound that great. I've been going back and forth for the last few weeks with what I want to get. I've had a crush on the SA-8's since they came out, and I want to do two of them in either a great ported enclosure or a t-line. A couple months ago I got the bug for a 3512, which I would do either bandpassed or ported. A few days ago, a guy on PBNation got a pair of 1508's, put them in a t-line, and posted some videos, so I got hooked on that.

For the last few days, i've been debating among myself which one I want. These would be powered by an AP15001D, so 1500W @ 1 Ohm. I've got a 98 malibu, and I never drag stuff around, so trunk space isn't really an issue for the T-lines. I guess i'm looking for something that will give me decent enough SQ when I turn the volume down, but get loud without getting ridiculous and out of control like my Type-R seems to do. The R just isn't really giving me SQ in any capacity, haha

If y'all wanna pitch in which enclosure you would recommend, too, that would be greatly helpful.

Shame the Orphan8's don't have the coil you probably need.

For your application I would recommend staying with a properly aligned ported enclosure. Will have great output and still remain musical. T-Lines can be very large and complicated to build to acheive your goals.

The DD1508 are a great performer but for the price I think the SA-8 are a better driver. I have heard both of these in a head to head comparison at the local DD dealer who is also the Sundown Dealer. Both were very comparable in output but the SA-8 had better sq and lowend.

The 3512 is going to be quite expensive but a good driver.

Your car isn't nearly big enough for a T-line in the sub frequencies. Anyone who tells you differently doesn't understand the enclosure.

Before making any recommendations it would be helpful to understand what you mean by no SQ and what enclosure your type R is in. 99% of the time it is the install at fault and not the driver.

The Alpine just sort of went "brrrr brr brrrrrrr" and there wasn't really an attack/beginning to the note like i've heard most other subs do. It wasn't very tight, and forget about double bass. It just came out as one sort of half hearted blur of sound. (note the past tense, sold it about an hour ago on CL) It was an Alpine spec box (read: really tiny) I made myself, about 1.3 cubes iirc.

Thanks for the suggestions. There's a guy on PBNation with a 3512D motor and basket he's be willing to get rid of for pretty cheap. He had said 150 before, but he mentioned that he got something else cheap recently, so he was willing to come down on the 3512. I need to see what he wants now. DD quoted me 80 bucks for a 3512 d2 recone.

I think i'm going to just sit on the decision for a week or so, and see what I like then.

Still huge unless you are tuning ultra high or not using an appropriate factor for the actual tube diameter. For 2 SA-8's my guess is that it would be at least a 16" x 16" T-line. Add to that it will be over 10' long and that will be one fucking huge box. My numbers are somewhat arbitrary as I haven't looked, but I am sure they aren't that far off from Martin King's recommendations.

Oh, and the box above is NOT a T-line. Not even close. Probably just a butchered ported enclosure.

Probably a labryinth style port instead of an L-shaped and assumed it was a T-Line :rolleyes:

mmkay, I'll consider myself educated on that one. So between a bandpass 3512, ported 3512, ported SA-8's, or ported 1508's, which would you recommend?

Im not the best guy to ask for advice but i have had my few shinning moments LOL. For a trunk car id suggest a setup that has a rear firing sub and port, from what i gather and have had success with, allows the wave to build properly. Those that are techy with this chime in.

That's what my Type-R was, and it was pretty loud, but that's ALL it was. It didn't sound very good at all.

Are two ported 12's out of the question? There's always the 2-12" Skar vvx deal. You get two 12" subs in a ported box built to your specs, shipped for $350. And two of those would be a great match for your amp. If you don't care about room and are on a budget, that's what I'd do. Or maybe one sa15?
