Hey I am looking to upgrade my laptop's harddrive.

My laptop is around 5 years old... it is a Dell Inspiron E1505 and its running windows xp..

I want to replace the harddrive on it so it will run faster and so I can store a lot of music on it without any problems

I am looking to spend around $50... I want to get one as cheep as possible but I can spend $100 max..

Any suggestions would be nice.. Thanks

how will replacing the hard drive make it run faster?

What are you trying to go faster?

how will replacing the hard drive make it run faster?

What are you trying to go faster?

My laptop constantly becomes unresponsive an usually runs quite slow...

So im going to restore factory settings and I thought I would replace the hard drive with something bigger to improve performance..

I am afraid after I restore it and then go on to add tons of music that it will return to being unresponsive and slow..

If there is a better way to do this let me know

Depending on what was in there originally you could add a 7200rpm HDD and of course go bigger ... this will make it "faster" but so will starting from scratch... Also what RAM do you have?

TO be honest if a SSD drive is compatible then that will make a WORLD of difference... But depends on money you're willing to spend

If you're looking to spend only $80 or less then find a cheap 7200rpm HDD and purchase from Best Buy and you can return it if you didn't get what you wanted out of it...

It has 512 MB of RAM ... and yea I am looking to spend $50-$80 bucks so I guess an SSD drive is out of my range

I was thinking about buying it from newegg.com... should i use bestbuy instead?

I want to say that the internal harddrive is only 150gb... (could be wrong)

So would ram or better harddrive help more? and which is cheaper lol

RAM will help more than a new HDD for certain. The way prices have and continue to drop on computer components the RAM could be cheaper than the HDD. Ordering from Newegg is recommended IMO. Cheaper prices, easy to deal with when a return is needed and you could get both the RAM upgrade and a HDD for more storage at the same place at the same time.

What exactly would I need to buy to increase the RAM?

hold on now....

Get back on your computer..

When your computer starts to act slow, do this-

Go to bottom of screen that uses the same frame border as the start button.

In an empty area in this bar, right click and choose task manager.

go into Performance tab

look near the bottom.

It will say total memory on the right = xxxxxxx MB

On the left, it will say something like peak memory xxxxxx MB

IF the PEAK memory has EVER surpassed the total installed memory when running slow, then yes, more RAM is definitely better.
