I'm going to build a ported box for my RL-p (couldn't resist, since a lot of people say it's better there). Now, what volume should it be (2cuft @ 34hz??)? and how do u calculate port area? I'm a noob in regard to building a ported box :P .

If some of you can provide a plan that will be awesome.

Thanks in advance.

For an RL-p12 in car, 1.5 - 2.0 cu ft net volume tuned between 28 - 34 Hz.

For an RL-p12 in home, 2.0 cu ft net volume tuned betweem 20 - 25 Hz.

To understand the relationship between the net volume, port area, length, and tuning frequency, read and re-read the following tutorial by JL Audio: [link]

Then once you know the process, use the online calculator at the bottom of the following link to avoid that nasty formula: [link]

Feel free to ignore the minimum vent area calculator and go with our recommendation of 20 square inches on the RL-p12. Vent area is simply the cross-sectional (length x width) of a quadrillateral (slot) port opening or (Pi * radius^2) for a round port. Round ports can typically be a little smaller than their slot port counterpart and still provide comparable performance.
