December 7, 201113 yr I have not owned a D3100. I did own a D5000 and a D7000.I recommend a D5100 over the D3100 for a few reasons.1. Higher ISO ability (helps for really really dark shots when slower shutter speeds when needed, could be the difference between getting a shot and not getting one)2. Higher MP (helps for tight cropping while maintaining higher dpi<----better printing)3. Bracketing function (bracketing allows you to take multiple exposures at a time which is beneficial for HDR and other reasons)I am sure the D5100 has better ergonomics but I haven't looked in to it.
