As the title states, I've got one of these HU's coming. It's BNIB, never used, never opened. It wasn't really a planned purchase, the seller posted it up on EBAY and when I threw in my max bid it was at $32. After a few other bids went on it It came to $104.50 and that's what I won it at! Pretty damn decent deal IMHO.

That brings me to the point of my thread. Anyone have any experience with the EQ settings on this unit? It has a plethora of crossover, DTA, and EQ settings, but it's only a 5 band parametric EQ. The question I'm trying to answer is, what frequencies can you select for each of the bands? The book only says 20hz - 20khz. Most list the frequencies such as: Band 1 40/50/60/80/100/120, for example, this one doesn't.

I was planning on, and still may be planning on, getting a Kenwood KDC-X996 for the Jimmy. It'll be plug and play with MUCH better features than the X492 that's in it now. If I don't use the Clarion in my Jimmy it will be going into the Blazer project.

It probably works the same as the dxz 785usb which i happen to own. the 785 only had a 3 band parametric but it was l/r independent. frequencies were stepped just like the crossover frequencies (not continuously variable like it may imply). similarly, Q's were 1,3,5,7,20 or something like that.

That's kewl, thanks man. I was pretty certain it's not continuously variable, THAT would particularly rare, unusual, and hard to implement I would think.

Now I just got to get it, play with it a little on the bench, and see if I want to use it or go ahead and order the 996.

Well I've had this thing for a bit now, just now getting to checking it out closely. As you should be able to tell by the pictures the guy who sold it to me was definitely legit. Not ONE of the taped closed bags containing the HU's wires and accessories was opened, the faceplate still has the protective films on it, and the screws that protect the CD mechanism during shipping were still in it. It was most definitely never used and I doubt ever even opened. I'm ordering a wire harness and dash kit just for this HU. The reason I'm doing that is so I can pretty much plug and play it into the Jimmy, then whichever HU I decide to keep in it can plug back in and the other will be ready to plug and play into the Blazer Project when it begins. I hooked it up on the bench to play with some of the settings and such to get an initial feel for it and when the harness adapter and dash kit come in I'll swap it into the Jimmy. So far I've found that any of the five bands of the EQ can be set to a host of a range of frequencies, I'll list them all below. It also has a 3 slot memory function so you can store and recall up to three different sets of EQ, T/A, Crossover settings and recall each at a flash with just a few of button presses which can be real handy for comparison purposes. I gotta say I do like the color cycles and choices, it looks real good doing that.

Yeah that would have been sweet. I think it's amazing though how it lets you set any band to any frequency in that range, same with the crossovers. Makes it extremely versatile.

for an alpine 9855, for example, they limit you to a small range of frequencies per band.

What he means is he has 5 chances of setting to any of those center frequencies. He has a 5 band "variable" (parametric) EQ.

Once he choose any of those 5 center frequencies, he's maxed out.

Parametric is usually more requested than graphic which is a forced set of center frequencies.

Reason being is it's highly unlikely that every center frequency is wrong in the vehicle.

So, to save money and time, parametric EQ is more ideal.

So you can pick 5 out if those frequencies and it will cover a small range with the numbers you picked as the center point? Seems really cool... wonder how it would sound.

It's not that it will only cover that range of frequencies, but that each band will be able to adjust the frequency it's set to. The big difference between this and most other EQ's is that any one band (1 thru 5) can be set to any one of the listed frequencies. For example as I was playing around with it I was able to set band 1 to 1.6khz, band 2 to 4khz, band 3 to through, band 4 to 25hz and band 3 to 6.3khz. Not that particular arrangement would be useful, but its just not possible with most any other EQ. Which as mentioned just makes it very versatile.

I'm getting real excited to get to trying it out in the Jimmy.

GREAT!  There's more power and flexibility for tuning in the thing than any HU I've used before.  While it sure could have a few more amenities like seperate EQ for the high, mid, and low outputs, more EQ bands, and other such things it's still a plenty powerful unit.  For the price I don't think there's another one on the market that can compete.

 

I've been so glad I got that unit and put it in the truck.  I can't wait 'til I get the new engine dropped into the truck so I can drive it again and see how the HU and everything else does fully active, which is my next step.

the only downfall to this headunit is the glare on the screen on a bright day it is quite hard to see no matter the color displayed

Must be a difference in the orientation of the cabin and placement of the HU as I don't have any problems seeing mine.

You'd probably be very surprised.  I currently have the HU running an active setup with 3" full range drivers on the dash, 6.5" dedicated midbass in the doors and the sub in the rear.  Band 1 is set to 40hz and is down -6dB and Band 2 is set to 125hz and is down -2dB and the rest of the bands are flat.  I have it set that way to keep the bass/midbass from the 6.5's super clean.

Sounds nearly identical to my Clarion NX702. My only grip, is not DB Slope, no HPF or LPF, and Xover points =(

 

Can you confirm the same for you?

Awesome brother!!  I'm glad to hear all the goodies are unlocked for you now!  

 

 

So is it just like the settings in the book for the CZ?  I think it's really crappy they don't have any of the details about the crossover, DTA, and other audio settings in that book for the NX.  I can see how it would be really easy for a person to miss that part of the initial setup and not get the good controls unlocked.  On top of that with no details on how any of that works how would they know what settings they could use?  Clarion really dropped the ball on the manual for your unit for sure but if the settings really are the same as they are in the CZ then that manual combined with the one for the NX should guide you through it all pretty well.
