To buy a road bike or not to buy a road bike for commuting?

My current mountain bike has 2.0 / 1.75 slicks (front/rear) and I can average around 14-15 mph. And there are stretches of road where I run out of gearing. Only about 200 yards of rough road.

I found a complete bike built on this frame, for $100, ready to ride. And in the right size. I wonder if I can make my commute faster, as I've never ever ridden a road bike.

Faster? Sure.

Until you crack 20+ road bike aerodynamics don't really slow you down though it is all rolling resistance. Unlike most Lance Armstrong wannabes the reality is also that fatter tires have less rolling resistance...until the air resistance trumps them.

So a set of ultra skinnies on your mt bike may do you just as well. The rest depends on fit and body positioning. Of course if you run out of gear now, you'll really run out with a set of slicks on it.

And yes, tires with NO TREAD at all are better on a road bike EVEN in water than those with. Something in the 28-32mm range is ideal. 32 being the most comfortable, but 28 probably being the quickest. Anything skinnier is for aero and you need to be humping for that to help.

Of course, you can buy that thing and sell it for more obviously.

Love that no state I have been in is on the list, and Hawaii is the only one with a decent sized military base.

The worst list was not surprising either.

Not really.

J

They made the worst list though.
