February 20, 201312 yr Usually two stalks of celery, two carrots, an apple, a banana and ice cubes. Less than 500 calories and a full day's serving of fruits and veggies.
February 20, 201312 yr Life of Pi, good stuff. As more time passed after I saw it, the more I felt jipped (sp?). Gypped. From Gypsy.

February 20, 201312 yr Matt, or anyone else interested, have you ever heard of NutriTiming https://nutritiming.com/It was made by some doctor. Input height, weight, age, etc. Comes up with a resting energy expenditure. Input what you ate for the day, and at what times, and what physical activity. Then it shows for each hour if you're in a caloric deficit or surplus. Supposedly it's common use with fancy athletes, or big people as you can see where they aren't eating enough, or eating too much.Anyway I messed with it just for kicks, and won't be using it, so now I have 30 days left on my account until it expires. Anyone want it?Basically if you already know your BMR/RMR/REE, track what you eat already, and know how to use MET tables then it's nothing revolutionary. No, thanks though. Sounds cool.
February 20, 201312 yr http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/food-guide-aliment/choose-choix/fruit/serving-portion-eng.php 2 carrots + 2 stalks of celery + 1 banana + 1 apple = ~4 servings of vegetables, ~2 servings of fruit.
February 20, 201312 yr Sean, I seriously don't understand how you have enough time to cook in that way, work and have the children's.The way he cooks is actually faster. Sounds counter intuitive, but in the long run he has an understanding of spices anx how to use them and knows what to expect. My guess is also he can process food with a knife some 10-20 times faster and more evenly than you. And knife work is the most time consuming part of cooking with whole foods.
February 20, 201312 yr As a general rule any veggie that requires 1 cup raw instead of 1/2 cup to count as a serving I usually don't touch
February 20, 201312 yr Sean, I seriously don't understand how you have enough time to cook in that way, work and have the children's.I bet it takes me less time to make chili with all fresh ingredients than it takes you to make it with off the shelf stuff.Knife skills are the key to cooking. Obviously there aren't so many needed for chili, but nonetheless I am not slow at anything I do....or I could have just read the next page. Seriously, I need to take a knife class. I'm competent, but no ninja yet.

February 20, 201312 yr You talked about toasting spices and Indian food. So funny because I just talked with the wife about how we are goind to start eating more Indian food and I want to learn how to weild the spices.I am a bit nervous about turmeric, it is a root like ginger correct? I also never in my life though of grinding my own chili's. It just never even popled into my head.Though I know it will be a long time beforen I give up onion and garlic powder it's slowly going away. I fucking hate pealing garlic though.

February 20, 201312 yr Grinding your own chiles is worth it. If you're grinding anchos make sure to freeze the bastards first. It's like grinding up gummy bears otherwise.
February 20, 201312 yr My wife will not eat vegis, so every morning, she gets a smoothie with a couple frozen strawberries, some OJ a cup of spinach (or other vegi that is mellow in flavor) and a scoop of protein. Usually an extra few ice cubes. Sometimes I will add milk or extra fiber. She drinks it and it literally has increased her vegi intake by more than tripple I bet.I do this every day, too. Not a lot of leafy green veggies, though. Can't stand most of them. You can't taste the spinach. The vitamix destroys it. We buy the HUGE bag at Costco, use about half of it fresh, then before it goes bad, freeze it and use it frozen.Really makes a difference.

February 20, 201312 yr I am proud of the wife though. She wants to start a vegi garden and try new vegis. I think she can feel the difference the spinach makes in her body.

February 20, 201312 yr I make curry pretty frequently, but I unusually use a wet made curry base and then add in the protein and onion etc etc.It was the a few times ago using a powder and then adding to it that I decided I wanted to build my own curries.

Anchos have a thick, rubbery skin and are a PITA to pulverize unless you freeze them solid. Dried Pasilia's too. Dried guajillo, cascabel, piquin, and de arbol chiles have papery skin and are really easy to shred.
