we jsut picked up a coustic h/u at the shop..it's double din, has a built in 5" touch screen, dvd player, top load....has anyone here used or seen used coustic h/u? scott is hinting around at me putting it in place of my eclipse. it retails around $600 (which i won't be paying, lol), but that's kinda what scares me....you know, you get what you pay for?

let me know if anyone knows anything, i'm going to talk to him about it later today.

I know their old school units were made by Denon and were actually great heads that didn't carry the Denon pricetag.

I'd never heard that information before?

Where did you hear it?

Sure you're not thinking of the RF units?

Our old dealer, Classic Stereo. He used to carry both brands and had the first ever Denon HUs I'd ever seen in the early to mid 90s. When he had to place an order for Coustic Units, he had to orderf from Denon and send them there for repair. My sister's old boyfriend had one from there that went on the fritz and the guy from Classic passed this info onto us.

well, i actually had the name wrong..my bad. it's actually concept, not coustic.

and i believe ryan is right about the coustic old school ones. after doing a bit of research, coustic isn't even making source units as far as i can tell.

here's the one i'm being talked into trying..lol

but it doesn't really list any preout voltage anywhere. so i'm assuming in the 2 volt range. any accurate ways of measuring this?

sorry about the mix up...

ok..quick update...

the ddm-50 is in truck! and i'll say this...

i like it. it can lose some gimmicks for more practical items (like lose the reverb for crossovers). have access to the "eq" from the radio, not just the cd/dvd player. have a real eq, not just the preset stuff. you get the point.

while it fits in the dash trim panel excellently, it does take a bit of modification to the plastic bracing in dash to make it fit. nothing serious, but you have to break apart the area where the factory "support plug" would go. but once done, the thing looks like a factory piece! i mean, no flash, but pure funtion, which i like. and it should keep theft done as well.

the buttons don't light and you can't access everything from the touchscreen. that needs fixed. i need one or the other because i hate using the remote.

it could stand to lose some of the gimmicks, like reverb(which has several options. while neat to play with, it isn't needed IMO) for more practical items like crossovers and a subwoofer control. it does have a sub out, but you don't have the option to adjust it from the headunit. voltage is fine with 2.5 for front/rear and 4 volt on the sub. i'll get the actual specs in a few.

all in all, it's been a decent little headunit so far. some good, some bad, but what isn't? i will do a better review, with a list of all options, later when my finger heals. it's hard as hell to type with this damn bandage on..lol...
