Posted April 7, 201312 yr what would it take to have surround sound in a vehicle and about how much will it cost to do so
April 7, 201312 yr It would take front, center, rear and sub and the cost will be as much as you want to spend. Analog and digital are 2 different beasts with 2 different price ranges.

April 7, 201312 yr unless you drive a Chevrolet movie theater there is no need. haha too funny, one of my favorite songs. Damn, I didn't know you knew this song julian, good shit man.
April 7, 201312 yr unless you drive a Chevrolet movie theater there is no need.Depends on who you talk to. Some argue that, due to our non-ideal seating positions in a vehicle, surround sound offers one of the better options for improving imaging and sound stage. Which is the reason, for example, the JBL MS8 has ProLogic7. Not because it was designed to be an in-vehicle media center, but because the engineers @ JBL felt it offered one of the better solutions for improved imaging.
April 7, 201312 yr Very well said impious.. When I read surround I instantly thought of 5/7.1 surround sound. Since most music is recorded that way
April 7, 201312 yr The BMW that Biggs built in 2006-07 ish had a MS8 and had the highest SQ score ever in IASCA and MECA

April 8, 201312 yr Author I want to have an orchestra like sound in my truck, and I figured going for the surround sound route it'd the best way to accomplish that... any suggestions?

The MS8 takes a stereo source, applies it's Logic7 algorithms and extrapolates out 5.1/7.1 surround sound based on the original source. Information that would have been "center" imaged based on the stereo recording is reproduced by the center channel, etc.

April 8, 201312 yr Guy I know had an MS8 setup running L7, but it wasn't well implemented in his install and I much preferred stereo in that particular installation. I've had fleeting thoughts of trying it with my MS8 but would rather have the benefits of active than passive w/ L7. I want to have an orchestra like sound in my truck, and I figured going for the surround sound route it'd the best way to accomplish that...any suggestions? Chances are good you could get what you were looking for without having to result to the added cost and complexity of surround sound.
April 8, 201312 yr Author I actually thought about getting a ms-8 or something similar... I'm still doing my homework on it
April 8, 201312 yr Impious the clarification was for the board, not you. And LS, you are looking to add a nifty mechanism that does nothing to help your goals. If I read what you were trying to say is that you would like something that sounds awesome. That is achieveable and absolutely when found will not be improved by adding more channels.
April 8, 201312 yr True surround sound will sound awfull. You'll get most of the sound in the center channel and bass with just accents in the left right and rear. It's best to have it in stereo with amplifiedfront and rear and run a center channel off head units speaker outs. I use a pair of rockford punch 2 and a halves. Turn your head unit up to 75% the increase your front stage until you cant tell if it's coming from which speakerthen turn up rear until it you can tell it's coming from the rear then back off slightlytill you don't notice the direction of sound. Now the sound will envelope you instead of hearing it come from the speaker. Only one issue is if your head unit doesn't turn up the center channelloud enough you'll need a small amp. When you go the orchestra(or concert) are there any people playing instruments behind you?Reflections. 'Nuff said. I hate this anology though. Same with "concert quality staging.". A concert is a horrible environment, and a theater is not much better.Actually, I think the entire concept of staging is a joke, but I won't get into that now.
