Posted May 12, 201312 yr ok so my friend has a fi sp4 18 ordered and he wants me to get a single 18 setup also with the evil, smd, ect. and if i can find a good deal on them i might buy two or i might buy 2 sp4s what do yall think the best 4" coil sub is right now? ps. im going for low bass and i have enough room for one or two but if i go two im going wall
May 12, 201312 yr Ridiculous question, even more so because all the ones you listed are made by the same company.
May 12, 201312 yr Author there not all by the same company the smd is acendent audio the sp4 is fi and the evil is ssa and how is it a ridiculous question?
May 12, 201312 yr Yes all three are built for a different nitch in the sub world buy one of the best in the business.
May 12, 201312 yr Author i did not know this im sure they dont have all the same specs though and im trying to figure out which one is the best to get low on and the sp4 is the cheapest are the other ones worth the extra money?
May 12, 201312 yr And it's a ridiculous question because each of those woofers were designed for different purposes. If you gave more details on your install it would be easier to help narrow down your choices.
May 12, 201312 yr Author my goals are to get low as i can i have more than enough room for one 18 what else do you need? i havent bought an amp yet im going to get the sub first
May 12, 201312 yr All of them are great choices. Read up and study on each one so you can make an educated buy getting exactly what you want.
May 12, 201312 yr Different levels of knowledge will form different opinions on woofers, so the best bet when vs them to buy is to educate yourself and form your own opinion to suit your needs.
May 12, 201312 yr If I needed a sub to fit in a moderately small enclosure with a low f3 with minimum passband ripple I'd get the SP4. IMO it's the best sub on the market that fits that criteria.
May 12, 201312 yr Author if i go two im set on the sp4 if i go just one im thinking the smd and i kinda want to go two sp4s and wall it
May 12, 201312 yr And it's a ridiculous question because each of those woofers were designed for different purposes. If you gave more details on your install it would be easier to help narrow down your choices. I am searching the market for my next sub system. I am considering and comparing a lot of different drivers. Unless I am not seeing it the Evil and SP4 model nearly exactly the same. Enclosure size, power handling and xmax (along with the rest of the specs) are also nearly identical. The biggest difference is cost. What is different in the design purpose? And btw I didn't neg rep you. Both are 18" same power, same enclosure (within manufacturer specs)
May 12, 201312 yr Author they are very close the more i think about it the more i want to find a deal on 2 sp4s

Obviously its install dependent, but hearing both in high power scenarios. I'd say that graphs can't reproduce the way a driver will sound, and is only going by numbers.

Had to of been differences in the install and vehicle they were installed in.

So are you suggesting that if we placed two different drivers that had the exact or nearly exact t/s paramerters in a controled environment, that they will sound the same musically?

I have never heard of such a test. Certainly would be interesting.
May 13, 201312 yr T/S parameters describe the low frequency behavior of the driver at low power. That includes amplitude, phase and time domain behavior (overshoot, ringing, etc). What they don't tell you is, for example, how the parameters shift as power is applied or about distortion related behavior. If the parameter shift is audible and different between the drivers, or the distortion behavior is different in a significant way, it would be entirely possible for two drivers with nearly identical classical T/S to "sound" and behave different at listening levels. That said I don't know enough about the differences between these two particular drivers to say how their performance might differ in those two particular criteria.
