Posted April 19, 200619 yr I'm having a small problem with my system. I can really use some feedback from you guys.I have 2 soundstream eg-15's(400 rms ea.) hooked up to my SS tarantula tr880/2 (880 rms). everything is great ,they hit hard, but when I turn up the gain and volume for higher spl the amp will shut off. but only on certain hard hitting songs. I'm pretty sure the amp can handle these volumes, being an old school tarantula.I'm thinking it may be the voltage drop it causes at these volumes. But the voltage drop doesn't seem to bad going by the headlights. I do only have a stock alt., and I haven't done the big 3.I'm wondering if voltage drop would cause the amp protection to turn off. any other ideas on what could be the problem would be helpful too. Thanks
April 19, 200619 yr Or the amp could be clipping, and going into self-preservation mode...Please read the gain setting sticky, the gain control is not a volume control.
April 19, 200619 yr voltage drop will cause an amp to shut off, if it has that built in for protection.scott is on to something as well. if it's only happening when you crank the gain and the volume knob, you are more then likely clipping the amp. and it's probbly going into protect. take his advice and set your gain correctly and leave it alone.wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
April 19, 200619 yr It is definetely one or all of the three recommendations that have been made.<{POST_SNAPBACK}>+2
April 19, 200619 yr Could also be low impedance issue causing overheating. Some have a thermal switch that will stay open until cool, other's will simply need to be shut off to reset.
April 20, 200619 yr Author Great replies and fast guys, thanks. I'm going to do the big 3 soon as possible. see if it solves the problem. Need to get a wireing diagram at an auto parts store, I don't want to do the wrong wires. I need to fix the problem before I can compete in some local competitions. I hope the amps not clipping. That would mean my amp can't handle the volume I want, and my system probably wouldn't be very competable at a comp. I paid $10 for a reading and hit 138.4 at volume where it doesn't shut off. I want at least 140.The amp almost never gets hot. and it always turns on as soon as I turn it down. I have it hooked up @4 ohm's mono now, it wouldn't handle 2ohm. I was surprised that the tarantula wasn't stable under 4 ohm mono.

I was surprised that the tarantula wasn't stable under 4 ohm mono.most two channel amps AREN'T 2 ohm mono stable. 98.9% of them are rated for 4 ohm mono. but you seriously need to look into a nice strong mono block that's 2 ohm stable. memphis mc1500d comes to mind. talk to flakko here about us amps. look into zed and powerbass as well. all have products capable of gettign you where you want to go.since you rewired, has the problem gone away? wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
April 20, 200619 yr The benefit of the mono amp is twofold as they are most commonly a digital variety and far more efficient than their A?b counterparts.
