So I helped a buddy install an Alpine HU last night. It was the first time I worked on audio in a loooooong time. He wants to do an amp, front speaker combo. I am trying to convince him that deadening will be the best bang for his buck when doing the doors. He has about $650 for budget and I'm trying to figure out the best way to maximize the budget.

Sound Deadening

Based on what I see with SDS the 3M acoustic is the highest cost. I'd like to do 25% CLD, a layer of CCF and MLV, some CCF to control rattles and a little 3M acoustic (most expensive it seems)

I can probably spend about $300 on deadening and leave $350 for Speakers/Amp

Speakers

I'm thinking that a passive component set will be easiest. His HU doesn't have Crossovers or anything

Amp

I'm thinking something used, and the best quality I can get with the remaining budget.

He is wanting to try and get the front stage beefy enough that he won't want a sub. He doesn't have one currently and doesn't seem to be too concerned. Any tips for speakers/amps to look into?

Tuned in.  Speaker wise, both the IA 6.5's and the Sundown SA-6.5CS's have had good feedback for us. There is an open box component set of a past brand on the SSA Store we are getting rid of cheap.

Decent set on PE:

As for amps, if just a two channel:

I have an Orion 8002 I am not sure what I am going to do with it yet.  There are a few 4 channels on our open box page we are unloading cheap.

Speakers

The Pio set is interesting, but with him going subless I'm wondering if I should really focus on something with better midbass drivers. I'd love to build a crossover, but have never done one and am worried I'll end up with improper tuning for the speaker locations.

Amp

I'm going to try to find a "clean" compact amp as that is what he is looking for. The Polks looks nice and are considerably cheaper than I expected

Installation

Since this is pretty important for driver selection II expect to use stock locations, unless someone is extremely convincing that tweets will work much better on the pillars in the truck.

you can probably pass on the thinsulate for the doors but you forgot about the extruded butyl rope (which helps a ton). if it was my own car I would definitely use the thinsulate.

you're probably overestimating the deadening cost for just the doors. get that quote from Don first.

shame you already grabbed the hu, could have gone active but this is my idea.

deadening - $200

4 channel - $150 used

minidsp 2x4 - $100 shipped

speakers - $200 (raw drivers)

I'd start with finding the biggest reputable 4chn (bridgeable) that you can find cheap. It'd help to know mounting locations. After that work on an install deadening plan and see what is leftover. $100 proc and $50 worth of speakers will outdo $150 in a comp set unless you find a used gem.

Why a bridgeable 4 channel?

I had convinced myself I didn't want to go active with this build but I think the benefits are too good.

The door will be the location of the tweeter and mid. I would say the tweeter may could go in the pillar or on the door but I would avoid it unless necessary.

sail panel might be another location idea for the tweeters.

how much is left for the speakers?

limited to small format tweeter and 6-7" midrange.  no large formats, 3" full ranger, etc?

whats the mounting depth for the mid.

probably wont fit a exodus anarchy then. i'm not familiar with woofer/tweeter 2 way set ups. i've only done full range/midbass and a 3 way so i'm  not sure what drivers would be best.

i wonder if those vifa ring radiators would work...
