Posted September 7, 201411 yr Not really sure where to post this but in my 30 yrs experience I've never seen anything like this and thought I'd share. I bought my 16 yr old daughter a beat down Toyota Avalon for her first car. It's got a junker JVC head works but the sound was extremely anemic. I popped the trunk thinking a cheap set of 6x9's would be a quick fix but these cars never had rear deck speakers. Well shit, I'm pullin door panels. That's when I saw them. ABS ported enclosures? Harmon made? The factory speakers were trashed, foam surrounds completely gone but I was intrigued. I grabbed a set of 4"ers, went to install and found out they're 4 1/2" holes. Cant really open the fronts up without cutting into the port. Dammit...google. Parts Express has the only speaker 4.5" three screw mount I found. They're Bose, $26 each, and they're 1ohm. $104 plus shipping was a little more than I wanted to spend on something that could possibly end up sounding meh. So for now she's rocking some cheap Pio 4" with foam weatherstrip to seal the gap. Sounds ok but needs a little more power. So here I am, Sunday noon, about to install amps, hu, and a sub I've got layin around into a teenage girls car. At least she likes rock. A little softish for me but it is rock! September 7, 201411 yr Those are wild. I have seen a few factory subs in enclosures like that. Perhaps you could build an adapter plate, possibly out of the old speakers mounting ring/flange. just a thought after looking at the rotted speaker. What other equipment are you installing?
September 7, 201411 yr Author Perhaps you could build an adapter plate, What other equipment are you installing? Just some random closet excess. Old SS Granite 60.2 for the mids and either a powered 10" Bazooka tube or an old L7 10 in a good ported box/Cadence ZRS 500 watt combo. Nothing serious, just a little bump in the trunk. And thanks for the adapter idea. I can't believe I never thought of a mdf adapter ring. A friend has some beefy old school RF 5 1/4 mids. I may give that a shot soon.
