October 14, 201410 yr Author 8 awg.I think that is way over kill and a waste of money. That's my opinion. If you think it's way over kill, or an waste of money, then why ask the question? That's a waste of forum space, that's my opinion. You asked for an 2krm subwoofer. Take a look at an SSA Zcon, the terminals are to fit 8awg wiring. So are you saying they made an wasteful decision? What about Obisidian, their OA line allows 4awg, same can be said for B2 with their XC line. It is an safety hazard to have too small of wire. As questin said, use an calculater. You have been on this forum for too many years to be spoon feed for ANY questions you have, especially when there is calculators readily available. My hds210 sq subs can take 10 gauge. does that mean I need to use 10 awg. lol. Ok, we can play that game. Crescendo Audio BC5500. Dual 1/0 inputs. So tell me what happens when you only use half the inputs, or attempt to use 4awg vs 1/0. I am talking the amp to the sub. Not sub inputs.
October 14, 201410 yr Question One: How big does the wire really need to be? For 2k of power to a sub. Question Two: How many amps are you really putting thru the wire?
October 14, 201410 yr Author Question One: How big does the wire really need to be? For 2k of power to a sub. Question Two: How many amps are you really putting thru the wire? It depends on the voltage the amp is putting out. Ohm's law.
October 14, 201410 yr http://www.keywolf.com/American_Wire_Gauge.phpI believe that is for 115 volts not 14.2. amps are amps
October 14, 201410 yr Author http://www.keywolf.com/American_Wire_Gauge.phpI believe that is for 115 volts not 14.2. amps are amps Then if the amps stay the same the watts will change.
October 14, 201410 yr You asked questions and got answers. Then you tell people they are wrong, or you don't get it. If you don't get it, how can you say they are wrong? If you want someone to calculate your numbers for you, just say so, but that's no way to learn.I use 8awg for my single XCON at 1700rms. Am I wasting money? I think not. It is from an amp kit I bought years ago and it simply has no other use. Wasting money is relative to the amount of wire you will be purchasing. 5 feet of wire from 12awg to 8awg, not much price difference if you ask me. Get the 8awg then you can use it later if/when you run more power.
October 14, 201410 yr amps=watts divided by volts figure out how many amps you require and use the chart posted to find your wire size

It depends on the voltage the amp is putting out. Ohm's law. So then you mean to say you asked the wrong question(s)? Ex: If an 2,000 watt amplifier was being used to power an Subwoofer that is X distance away from it, what is the best wire size to use?

I think I asked the right question but never specified how far the sub would be from the amp.
October 14, 201410 yr Final thoughts, 6 awg pure copper OFC is like 47 cents a foot. Just call it a day and buy that. No need to do any extra math at that price point.
October 14, 201410 yr It makes no sense what so ever to run 6ga wire to a sub that sees 2k watts. Especially considering you need to buy double the length to run for + and -. I just dont understand how that could remotely be a good recommendation.

I just dont understand how that could remotely be a good recommendation. Of course it makes sense. SSA Zcon, comes with 8 awg inputs. If you buy Welding Cable, 6 awg = Car Audio 8 awg. And point B, You're only spending litterally ONE dollar per foot for the pair of cables. In a daily system, that means it'll cost less than 5$ per subwoofer. So at what point does it NOT make sense?
October 14, 201410 yr I always just use the biggest wire that can fit in the push terminals, I managed to do 6gauge to my SP4s.

October 15, 201410 yr I used 4g on my xcs for a while. I use 8g now because I won a 400 foot roll of sky high at a comp raffle. Some people will go overkill on wires some will not. I didn't need to run 24 runs of shca 2/0 to my amps but hell why not. Like senchez said the price for smaller gauge wire is Damn near negligible. Why not run the biggest you can fit.
October 15, 201410 yr Author So I used this speaker wire calculator and I would only gain .16 db going from 12 to 8. If I were competing it would help but for daily no.I thought it would bring up a larger pic. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CB4QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bcae1.com%2Fimages%2Fswfs%2Fspeakerwireselectorassistant.swf&ei=Bnk-VIHpEcrM8QHQ5ICgDA&usg=AFQjCNHWbnIxYLEsc6crPvD6kja5tnM8hg&sig2=WTwmhCJhYbT46dxqjxVH7w&bvm=bv.77412846,d.b2U http://www.bcae1.com/images/swfs/speakerwireselectorassistant.swf Edited October 15, 201410 yr by pmureika
