Posted July 23, 200619 yr I have a 2 door Acura Integra, which is a rather small car, and I have entered the IASCA SPL comp at Nopi, and I have a few questions about SPL, I've competed before, and even won a few trophies, but I am still rather new and would like to do better this year. First of all I'm debating on which woofer to use, I have a RL-p, which I dont think would be very good for SPL, so I was thinking of buying a Rockford Fosgate Team RF, they're rather expensive, but I hear they're really good for SPL. My debate is this though, I want to have the biggest advantage I can, and the IASCA has the classes set up in inches, which is hugely broad, like anything from one 8 to one 18 can compete in the same class, and I don't understand how that can be. I want to buy the 12 inch Team RF, because I think it would be easyer to fit, but then I'd be stuck with a 12 going against two 12s and three 10's and even single 18's. So if the speakers costed the same, and you had little room to work with, would you rather go with one 12 inch, or one 15 inch? Maybe theres something I'm missing, and someone can help explain. Thanks alot.
July 23, 200619 yr I'm more of an SQ guy but I do know that their is a BUNCH of stuff that effect overall SPL. The biggest two are matching the box specs to the speaker specs and the other is finding and "burping" at your car's resonant freq.
July 23, 200619 yr Author I appriciate the help, are there any SPL related forums I could go to? The only decent forums I find are mainly SQ, and I need some info on SPL
July 24, 200619 yr wow ... I never thought I would ever heaar anyone say that. Most of the forums are chocked with SPL info and the contests I go to - the SPL cars generally outnumber the SQ cars like 5 to 1 or more.
July 24, 200619 yr Admin I say maximize what you have, see how you do, then if it is not enough look to new equipment.
July 24, 200619 yr Author The team RF is going for ~300 on ebay with a 90 day warranty, supposivly new, I think its a refurb to be going for that cheap however, but if it has a factory warranty thats still worth it. Another option I'm thinking about going with is a cerwin vega stroker. What I hate, is the spl comps seem to have it set up where you have to have 2 or more woofers to have the advantage, you can't just have one 10 or one 12 or one 15 or so, you have to have three tens or two twelves to have the advantage, that really sucks because two woofers no matter what size cost more than what I wanna spend. If anything i'll probably get a used stroker or one of those team RFs, my main debate is of what size, a one 12 or one 15. How do they class the solox's? Since they're square, do they go by the original round square inch formula, or do they go by the actual square inches in the cone? Maybe if I got me say, a 15 inch solo, then i'd have more of an advantage, because its sqaure?
July 25, 200619 yr Author I'm planning on competeing in IASCA, I believe they go by square inches. 1-260 Is the class I'm going to be in. I don't understand why the inch range is so broad. That would mean that someone with one 6.5 would be competing against up to one 18, I don't really see how thats fair, but I guess its the rules. I'm going with a single woofer setup, and I've decided either a Solo baric L7 15, Cerwin-Vega Stroker 15, or a Team RF 12 or 15. Any input?
July 25, 200619 yr I'd go with a Solo-X like Casey suggested. As he and many another competitors can tell you the lane changable cone, is one of the best inventions ever............abouht plus blown Team RF= about 2 weeks turn around minimumblown Solo-X= without cone maybe a week max (find one on ebay or direct from kicker). or right there on the spot.Don't know about you but to me if i do the Math the solo-X is alot better.............plus square=more overall cone area, henceforth more air moved for louder numbers!!!!!J
July 26, 200619 yr Yea, you can't really use Solo-X's in IASCA unless you are in the stock 3+ class. Go with the TRF is you can afford it...
July 26, 200619 yr Author What about a Solo baric L7 15? I can get one of those for alot cheaper, and it has more cone area also
July 27, 200619 yr Author Or what if I was to buy two 12 inch RF punch z subwoofers, I can get a pair of those for like 40 bucks, or would the RL-p 15 be louder? (this may be a dumb question)
July 27, 200619 yr i competed in the 161-260 class in IASCA with a single 15 a did very well. Took 4th place in world finals a few years ago. Just need the proper design and lots of power. Dont forget that an amp that puts out lots of power sucks in even more. Get batteries and upgrade your alternator. In my opinion capacitors are a waste of money. They discharge too fast for SPL.
July 27, 200619 yr Author What 15 did you use? and how many decibles did you hit? My amp only draws about 140 amps. I'm getting a odyssey battery soon just in case, I'm getting one I can fit in my stock location so I won't have to be in a different class.
July 28, 200619 yr Author I'm not sure if this is the best enclosure design for me, but I've decided to give it a try. I've decided on a crx style box, driver facing up, ports towards the back. The dimensions are 13x30x20. Wood thickness is 1 inch. Total gross volume is 3 cubic ft. Five 3 inch ports 14 inches long tuned to 46 Hz. Has about 35 cubic inches of port area. If I hit at least 145.5, I'll be really happy, but i'm not getting my hopes up lol.
July 30, 200619 yr i hit 154 db at world finals with 1 digital designs 9515 and 4 memphis 16-st1000d amps running it. 2 extra batteries and a 145 amp alt.
