i have just killed an SE after a dodgy binding post causing the amp to send 850w to a single coil! and im considering a 12 SI magnum.

bearing in mind, the SE12 was receiving 1250w rms, and did 135.9(termlab) in an SUV in a 1.8cu ft box tuned to 30hz.

what can i expect from an magnum running off 850w rms?? i have been told they are efficient? but are they efficient enough to out do the SE

the SI will go in a similar if not the same box.

what can i expect? SPL and SQ wise? what sort of box would suit it best?

I a not the maven on the Magnums, but I am trying to be, but anyway many people are running around that amount of power and loving it, the SPL should be compareable, and the SQ will be awsome, there was one guy on here hitting 150 with a single D2 12, so that can give you an idea of its potential

are u only talking about SPL to the mic or SPL to the ear? big difference as u should know.

If ur talking about SPL to the ear then when i get my d2 i will be comparing my old 2 10" SE's sealed off 1200 watts vs my single 12" d2 sealed off 1200 watts. I only care about SPL to the ear tho Mics do nothing for me.

u are comparing 2 very different subs. like comparing a JL Audio 12W0 to an RF Hx2 for example - there is the world of difference between these speakers, least of all in weight, quality of parts, internal design, and most of all SQ.

SPL wise its always difficult to make a guess as there are hundreds of small factors whihc together can contribute to a db here or there.

but one thing is certain - SQ will be world's apart

i wouldnt call my self an SQ boy, but i do like my music to be listenable, and not have major peaks or troughs in the response. the SE was a little boomy when in SQ mode, and i'm confident the SI will sound better overall.

i suppose i am mainly wondering which will be louder, both to the ear, and to the mic. mic is probably more important, as i've heard many installs that 'seem' to be louder than mine, but that is only because they peaked higher. i like my bass very low, down to the shakey stuff thats not audible.

i realise both subs are worlds apart, i was just wondering what to expect

EDIT: again, i realise it is hard to guess SPL output, and i hate when some else asks that question, but what about in a straight swap situation? same car, same box etc, but 1200w for the SE, and 800w for the mag? any ideas? or too close to call?

You won't get any SPL estimates out of myself, Jacob, or any of my reps for that matter. There are simply too many variables to consider.

As far as the word Magnum and boomy being in the same sentance, it doesn't ocurr unless the phrase "is never" is between the two words. The only times I've heard people not thinking Magnum's either sounded good or weren't tight was when there were major box flaws.

what sort of box would you reccomend? for an LSQ/streetbass application.

maximum size i can go for is around 2.5cu ft before displacements. i would prefer ported.

In that case, just go with exactly what Nick recommends on the SI website. 2.0cubes @ 29hz. IMO the magnum would probably work great in your SE box with 1.8cubes with the slightly higher tuning.
