Posted April 8, 200718 yr hey guys, just wondering what peoples thoughts are on the 15" Mach 5 MAW-15 for SPL? how well does it perform? i've got a escort hatchback right now, i was thinking of just sticking it in a crx style box, tuned around 45hz w/ 2 4" aeroports off 600w for now, should be upgrading to something more powerful with in a few weeks..what do you guys think? will it break 140s?
April 8, 200718 yr SPL numbers are very hard to predict. The Maw 15 will be limited in its SPL output......buy who knows.
April 9, 200718 yr Author awesome, well i'll let you guys know what happends.. suppose to be grabbin the sub sometime this week, thursday or friday.
April 9, 200718 yr Yeah man, I think a 140 is doable. In my buddies celica at the show, with his 2x 12" type R's off ~800 watts RMS that did 139.7db, we tried a different friends MAW 15 in 2.4cf, and it was very close to what the type r's were doing. In your escort with that box, I think 140 should be doable.

April 12, 200718 yr i am pretty sure i'll be there as well this time to get metered. single maw 15" sealed in 2.45 net.from what i have heard in other cars i should be above 130 no prob.
April 12, 200718 yr Yea, 130 is a ways off 140.10x the acoustical power. But good luck, I'm curious to see how it does.
April 12, 200718 yr Author Not bad... CRX style box?ya, 2.5 cubes w/ 2 4" aeroports sub up, ports back tuned @ 45hz might need to do a bit more tuning for this sub though.
April 12, 200718 yr Admin I need to put one in one of my ported boxes and see if I can find a Termlab.
April 13, 200718 yr Yea, 130 is a ways off 140.10x the acoustical power. But good luck, I'm curious to see how it does.its a long way off 140db. i would guess i am hitting between 133-135db from other cars i've heard.and i am underpowering the maw. with 600+ rms i have no doubt i would be 136+ no 140 by any means, but ported should be able to do it even tuned lower than he is tuning.
April 13, 200718 yr Author a 140 could be done w/ 600wrms, just needs some work with the box I think.. any thoughts on that?
April 13, 200718 yr For that you'd be best off spending some time with Yuli I dunno how he makes a 10" sub, in MAYBE 1.5cf, with a massive 6" aeroport on the backside of the box so loud.Show that to any HT DIY'er and they'd figure the port's too big for the box and it wouldn't resonate, but act as an open box. Obvoiusly not though.I don't know enough about the theory behind it to logic it out, but maybe somebody out there does...?
April 14, 200718 yr Author here are some pics of the sub: its suppose to be dual 4, but i stuck my multi meter on it, and i'm getting a bunch of high numbers.. anyone know whats up? I think my meter is just crap..
April 14, 200718 yr It can be possible to get a 140 with a box tuned to 45hz. Some things that will help you are tuning around 5hz below the resonance frequency of your vehicle. Hopefully you can find that out. If not, 45hz is a good starting point. Next, trying to minimize impedence rise. With impedence rise, i bet the sub will be lucky to see even 400 watts, probably even less. Get some 8g wire and use that for speaker wire. Also, make sure you 45 the corners of your box. Add some bracing to it to, but from what i have seem, dowell works great to minimize air resistance inside the box. Then when you are metering, box placement will be key. You can gain yourself maybe up to 1db by just where you box is placed in the car. If you can manage to get some testing in, this is a key thing to test.
April 14, 200718 yr Author ya man, i don't know much about impedance rise and that stuff, how do I find out about that??more pics, and a video:heres the video: http://s165.photobucket.com/albums/u44/dae...nt=HPIM1920.flv Edited April 14, 200718 yr by 1LoudScort00
April 15, 200718 yr ya man, i don't know much about impedance rise and that stuff, how do I find out about that??more pics, and a video:heres the video: http://s165.photobucket.com/albums/u44/dae...nt=HPIM1920.flvlooks good. how loud is it to your ears?
April 16, 200718 yr Author it gets a little loud.. it'll flex my windshield a bit now, my old soundstream didn't do that kinda stuff... i get more flex, it sounds a bit louder, and alot clear then the soundstream did. I really like this sub alot.anyways, I was at the show today, I got to meet Viperoni and have a quick listen to his 2 18" mach5, I gotta say, it sounds AMAZING! I'm not much for the sound queitly stuff (starting to get into it lately) but wow, CLEAR, crisp bass. I don't know what to say, you'll have to hear it for yourself! LOL! amazing stuff Viperoni, thats all I can say.. LOL anyways! ya, so on my first run, I did a 136 point something with the ports back, and sub up, on my second run, i did a 137.6 with my buddy on the windshield, and the sub to the left, and ports back.so, i'm really happy with that.. i'm sure with a little more tuning to the box, i should get to 140, maybe a bit more.. who knows, I wanna try to get as loud as possable with the same amp (Coustic 600SE)
April 16, 200718 yr Author Very nice. Glad to hear it worked out. Ill be getting one myself soon too. nice man, i'm sure you'll enjoy it.. I really wanna get a daily box built for this thing though, see what it does at the lowwwws haha
