Posted July 5, 200718 yr I'll be updating this thread as I finish. I hope to be done by this weekend if not before thenOut with the old:JL 10w3v2 in a sealed ProBox powered by a JL 250/1In with the new:12" ICON D2 in a ported box built by mrray13 and powered by a Sundown Audio SAE-1000DHere's some pics of my truck:I'll keep updating as I work. Right now the gorilla glue is drying on the MDF that I'll mount the amps with on the back wall-John
July 5, 200718 yr oh snap, did i see a carpet cut line?lol...that is going to be a sweeeet combo in that truck!wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
July 5, 200718 yr Author oh snap, did i see a carpet cut line?lol...that is going to be a sweeeet combo in that truck!wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee haha who cares, it won't be seen anywaysI need to figure out how to set the amp once I get it installed... too many knobs that I have no clue what they mean. When I did my last install, I just did what JL Audio recommended for all the knobs and set my gain accordinglythanks for the compliments-John
July 6, 200718 yr Admin The Manual should explain them but if you need help we can.The gain is self explainitory, LPF is the low pass filter - as in where do you want the sub to play up to in frequency range,The phase is if you have the sub inverted, so if it is mounted normally I would say leave it at 0,BassBoost is not needed, it will only add distortion to the sound. There is a gain setting tutorial here on the forums.
July 6, 200718 yr The phase isn't just for inverted subs, I'd switch it and see what happens you may like it you may not.LPF should be set around 60hz, if your front stage needs more reinforcement or you lean to the bass head side of things you can turn it up. Anything above 80hz makes me sick to my stomach, but some people run them as high as possible since they have the most power on their subs. That doesn't blend with anything then though. The gain you can set by ear as well, but if you are timid the tutorial is fine in your case since your amps will do power.
July 6, 200718 yr i agree with sean..lpf somewhere between 60-80hz, no higher. i'll wager that unless your mids/subs are wired outa phase, the phase switch will be useless. however, like sean said, try it in both positions. it can indeed help out. boost=nono. and gain, well, that's been covered as well.can't wait to hear what you've got to say about that setup. it seems like it's made in heaven. if jacob had a five channel, the belle would be gone! kent=memphis fanboy no longer!wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
July 7, 200718 yr Author ok, so the LPF is just a switch to tell the amplifier when to activate the bass to the subwoofer as opposed to the front speakers? Is that what a crossover is?What will I be listening for with the 'phase' switch? Will it be a noticable difference, and is one better or worse for the sub?thanks again for all the help-John
July 7, 200718 yr Author UPDATE:I ran the main power wire for the amplifier and the glue is nice and dry for the amplifier mounts:Tomorrow I should be able to finish the project, but right now my fingers hurt from running this wire. The 1/0 gauge is definitely a lot harder to maneuver than the JL 8 gauge that you could tie in a knot like as if it were a shoelace, but I managed to find a nice route into the engine bay.I'll update tomorrow when I do some more work-John
July 7, 200718 yr Author chevys are so easy to run things....that's why I love my truck. lolyeah it had a nice channel for the wire built in quick updategot the amp mounting and power/ground/remote hooked up. Now I gotta go under the hood and mount the fuse holder so I can get power to this and put the actual box inwish me luck-John
July 7, 200718 yr Author I'm ready for the box to drop in, but it started raining so I'm gonna have to wait to set the box in. Speaking of rain, it's been ridiculous here in central Texas... I think it's rained like a month straight everyday, so the truck is dirtyyyyy-John
July 7, 200718 yr Admin Looking good, the whole set up goes awesome with the all blacked out theme of the truck (amp and sub).
July 7, 200718 yr lol, you think your truck is dirty? hehe...i can't wait to hear what you think of this combo. that amp is the sexy!!wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
July 7, 200718 yr Author I'm done with the installation. I've yet to tune the amp, but everything works so far so I'm happyI have all the knobs on the lowest setting, and the remote bass knob is all the way on minimum for now. I'll tune it tonight or tomorrow morningthere's not a 'break in time' is there? I heard install it and let her rip... what do you guys think?-John
July 8, 200718 yr Yet another Extended Cab done right. Looks great. Did you have any problems with the bench seat hitting the amp when the seat is up?
July 8, 200718 yr Author Yet another Extended Cab done right. Looks great. Did you have any problems with the bench seat hitting the amp when the seat is up? The seat hit the amp with my first set-up which is why I moved it to the right side of the rear wallthanks-John
July 8, 200718 yr Author so, how does it perform?wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee I hope I'm doing something wrong, cause I'm not impressed at all :/-John
July 8, 200718 yr Author The sub us brand new, it will take a little while to break in and loosen up. scratch my last comments, I figured it out and holy sh*t this thing slams. My head kinda hurts from the vibrations hahaI just tuned it by ear by playing the 50Hz tone, turning the gain up really slow and at one point I could hear the sub kinda make a flatter sound than before, so I backed it off a little. I hope that is what distortion sounds like, I think it was cause it definitely sounded funny and not like I want my bass to sound.I played Hypnotize by Jeezy, and oh my god... this is definitely what I was looking for in a subwoofer -John
July 9, 200718 yr lol..yep, that change in tone is distortion. glad you're liking it! i love my setup!wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
