    Box size and tuning frequency

23" deep x 16" tall x up to 38" wide. Got a 3ft^3 drawn up but I just don't have a lot of experience with different enclosures and how changing variables affects the subs output. I am trying to avoid building too many boxes to get what I want.

    GCON Ported Box Design

Have a 12" GCON in a sealed box. It sounds great but I am wanting more and I know the sub will give it to me if I can put it in the right enclosure. I used the ICON enclosure design for the sealed box it is in now, would the ICON ported design work well for the GCON as well? It falls into the optimal range, 2.5f^3 tuned to 33hz. It is a 2 ohm sub with 500 watts powering it in the trunk of a '96 accord. I have about 32" x 20" x 18" to work with. Anyone have any experience or recommendations for a ported box design that will work well with the GCON?

    Head Unit Tuning

Good to know because I was wondering the same thing about my HU tuning...guess I'll have to put in the effort and look to amp settings and install to get the sound I'm looking for. And I always thought it was as easy as turning up the bass boost and eq on my HU... I couldn't have been more wrong!
  8. I set my sub amp gains with my hu eq flat. It sounds ok, but I seem to be wanting a little more. Is it bad or potentially harmful to tune the eq on my head unit with the amp gains set as is, or is it wise to reset the gains after messing with the eq? I learned my lesson the hard way about bass boost by frying my last sub. My sub and amp are matched as far as RMS goes, so I dont want to take any chances and risk damaging my sub. Advice? And how reliable/accurate is the clipping light on an amp sub remote?

What are some really good deep hitting 12s?

I'm running 1 12" GCON on 500 watts in a sealed box and I am amazed at how clean, clear, and LOW it hits. I can't wait to hear it in a ported enclosure. I'm sure ICONs or XCONs would keep you grinning from ear to ear. SSA=quality! "This is hand made quality shit we're talkin' here..."

    Head Unit Tuning

I listen to mostly hip hop and rock/prog rock and metal. I have enough room to fit a ported enclosure, havent measured yet but based on the ported design plans for the ICON, I could fit it with room to spare. That is probably what I will end up doing after the first of the year. That and sound deadening. I have to see how big of a difference ccf and mlv actually make

    Head Unit Tuning

Well good resale value of the DD1 is good to know...anyone want to by a brand new DD1? I did think about wiring to 1 ohm, but until I am more comfortable with setting gains and tuning I am trying to stay safe...hence the DD1. My last sub was a JL 10" in a sealed enclosure. Before I fried it I ported it and WOW! So yes I have definitely considered porting the GCON, and probably will. Not having any experience with port tuning, should I just go with the recommended tuning?

    Head Unit Tuning

I turned the LPF up to 150hz. Where should it be set? Im sad to hear the dd1 is worthless I just couldnt afford an oscope and really didnt want to damage my GCON. What is the best way to set the sub gain? A 50hz track? I was thinking about porting too. Should the port be on the same side as the sub? Will it sound better with the port on the top? Are these things I just need to play with? I had no idea how in depth this hobby is...I love it! The hardest part is finding good teaching tools. Thank you guys for all your help

    Head Unit Tuning

I just got a GCON 12" 2ohm. It is powered by an aq1200d. I have it wired to 4 ohms which is giving it around 510 RMS. The GCON is in a sealed box 1.25ft^3. The box is in the trunk of my '96 accord facing backwards, centered. Front = 55w BA 5.25" components, Rear deck = 35w BA 6x9" coax. Both powered by Alpine 4 channel, 50w per channel. No sound deadening yet. Pioneer HU. The GCON gets super low and sounds crisp and clean, Im just not getting the SPL I'm craving. Gains are set via DD1. Thought about wiring sub down to 1 ohm but really dont feel like frying a new sub, which seems entirely possible since I obviously dont know as much as i thought i did (and I didnt think i knew that much to begin with:) The front stage sounds great, could use more mid bass but Im hoping cld ccf and mlv will help me out there, Just trying to get more bass and louder bass with what I have. Any suggestions?

    Component Upgrade

Looking to upgrade front stage with some new components. I have it narrowed down to two: SA-6.5CS, or Focal 165A1-SG. Have heard nothing but good things about both brands but have no personal experience with either. Any feed back? I know Focal makes an awesome product but is their lower end line as impressive as their expensive stuff? I'm looking for something that will sound good playing a variety of music. Will one be more versitile than the other? Or am I better off just flipping a coin?

    Need Midbass

I used the ICON plans. It is in a 1.25f^3 sealed box. Any tips on where to start on beefing up my install besides sound dapening?

    Need Midbass

Just got my GCON 12" am running a decent set of BA components up front and I now notice a gaping hole in midbass The GCON gets lower than I expected and the BA's are super crisp and clean on the highs but what can I use to fill the midbass? I am looking at the PWX or NeoPro 8" or 6.5"...which should I go with? I was leaning toward the PWX because of the price but I will only have around 100RMS to work with and the PWX are rated 200RMS! Will they sound good with 100RMS? any other suggestions, or is the NeoPro my best bet?

    Need Midbass

Amp settings are good so I will now play with the install. Thinking of enclosing the 6x9's so the sub isnt interfering. Also got som murder mat so I will play with sound deadening too. Thanks for the tips. I'll let you know how it works. Any other tips I can try are grately appreciated

I will play with the tuning and see what I can do...trying to figure out exactly what is lacking and how to fix it. The knowledge here on the forum is greatly appreciated

    Need Midbass

Front stage is amped yes. I have them on a 4 channel Alpine with a pair of 6x9's in the rear deck. thought about replacing the 6x9's to try and fill the hole I hear.

    Need Midbass

I wish I knew which frequencies I'm lacking, I just know when higher bass frequencies hit it sounds like the sound turns off in my car! I would like to keep it below $100 per speaker

    Need Midbass

So since I am barking up the wrong tree, where would you recomend my search start? 8 or 10" subs?
  22. handman84

    Need Midbass

both rear doors are free and so is my rear deck. I have a '96 Accord and I was thinking about putting something in the rear deck where the 6x9's are. The only reason I was looking at the NeoPros was the fact they claim you dont need a box for them to sound good

To cap or not to cap...

What are the benefits of using a capacitor? Does anyone recommend using a cap in their set up? Why or why not?

    What am I doing wrong?

sigh, so much to learn. Need to do serious homework before I drop my savings on new equipment! I guess having nice shit does no good if you have no idea how to set it up properly and get the most out of your equipment
