  5. I have a pair of RL-i8's in very good condition. They are in a sealed enclosure I built (see the build logs) and have been wonderful subs. I'm not posting them for sale yet because I haven't made up my mind. I'm curious to see if there are fans of the RL-i8's out there that would give these a good home.

Might let go of a pair of RL-i8's

I'm still holding onto them for now. My ICON 12 is sitting on the sideline getting jealous (and it's no slouch).

    2002 Toyota 4Runner

I finally finished (yeah, right!) the system in my 2002 Toyota 4Runner. I couldn't have done it without everyone's help here on the SSA forums, particularly denim, SSaudio, SoundSplinter, mrray13, and probably others that I'm forgetting (sorry!). Anyways, enough with the chatter. Enjoy your build log pr0n! I originally saw this design and thought it would be a nice fit for my daily SQ system. After reading that mrray13 achieved good results, it was a no-brainer to move forward with this instead of the typical sealed, since I have the room for it. Here I'm dry-fitting the first cuts for the TL box. Cutting out the front panel. Proof that this really is the TL box from the forum. And the full dry-fit before assembly. I was going to add some fancy handles to the front, but decided against it. I don't think they would have been structurally sound given the weight of the box and RL-i8 combined. Hopefully I won't need to move it too much. What's wrong with this picture? Mapping out where everything will fit. Yes, I'm anal. The terminal post is installed. Beginning final assembly with glue and screws. The RL-i8 has stepped in to supervise. Hello everybody! Here we are with the full assembly (need carpet) and the grille. I really hate to hide the beauty of the RL-i8, but it would be a crime for a stray 9-iron to find its way through the dust cap. Crappy picture of my beloved 4Runner. The JBL P650c components went into the stock sail and door panel locations. I'll take more pictures when I go back in to install the RAAMmat. The quintessential song for listening to any new stereo. A close-up of my new head unit (Pioneer DEH-P5900iB). I've got a 2nd-gen iPod hooked up behind the console, and the XM module hidden in the cargo panel door. Started removing seats and crap. I never realized how badly this truck needs a carpet cleaning before taking these pictures. The Sundown Audio 100.4 taking it easy in the captain's chair. A few shots of my 4 AWG running from the stock battery through the passenger side of the firewall. I ran the power through the side channel to the distribution block underneath the folding rear seats. Pulled up the carpet while running cables. The SAX-100.4 installed and cabled. With the seat back on... The rear cargo area with the box and SAX-100.2. I still need to carpet the sub box, mount the SAX-100.2 properly, and organize these cables, I ran out of time tonight.

    1965 VW Beetle +10" 187 = awesome

You have no idea what I'd do for that car. I've been wanting to find a '61-67 beetle forever. They're really hard to find on the East coast in any sort of decent condition. My 2nd car was a '73 standard Beetle that I used to show. Nice paint job. I love the clean look. Mine had the fender turn signals shaved and all the chrome removed. Lowered front-end with 8-spoke EMPI rims painted to match. *sigh*

Originally my single RL-i8 was running off a SAE-1500D prototype from Jacob. I burnt that up and eventually replaced it with the SAZ-1500D you see in that video.

    Still looking for components

I've been looking for new components for my 4Runner almost as long as I've been posting at SSA. The JBL P650C comps have served me dutifully (if not spectacularly) over the last couple years. I've never been able to find a quality set at a reasonable price that would fit in my doors without modification. I believe that the Hybrid Audio Clarus C51-2's will fit in there fine. I can't seem to track down the depth measurements in any of the Hybrid manuals, so I'm not comfortable that the C61-2's will fit. Can anyone recommend another high-quality 5-6" woofer with a shallow depth? As a point of reference, I also have a set of Seas CA18RLYs that won't fit. The basket won't fit the door cavity, and there isn't enough space behind the door panel to add rings behind the speaker. I believe the maximum depth I have to work with (surround to magnet) is around 76mm (3").

Yes, but not one I'd feel comfortable with for such a task.

I'd just as soon use the Jasper to cut both, with screws in the ring to cut the ID. I think it could be done cleanly by cutting the ID first using the Jasper, but leaving 2-3 "spokes" around the inner perimeter to give the inner ring a place to hold onto. Then cut the OD. And then finish it up with a jigsaw and sanding of the spokes.

To add to my last question, I'd like to know how to taper a ring, like this one. Other than very careful sanding, I can't imagine how that would be done.

    2002 Toyota 4Runner

Yeah, that's what I have. But that's not enough for creating rings. For example, I can cut out the center but then I won't have anywhere to put the center piece for the jig. Or I can cut out the exterior first but then I don't have enough room to clamp the piece (I could drill holes through it). Somewhere I read a technique for ring cutting that lets you cut perfect rings without marring the material.

    SAX-100.4 power output

I think that's the point the insurance company is trying to convey.

Certainly Have you thought about bending those mounting tabs a little ? It's not that the tabs themselves are pointing out. The post(?) they're attached to is just that far out to the side. Pics over here at the build log.

    2002 Toyota 4Runner

Took a detour away from the sub window for a bit to revisit the front components. I still have the JBL P650C comps and have been mostly happy with them. But I've always wondered "what if" I'd found a nice DIY set that would fit. I bought a set of Seas CA18RLY 6.5" mids when I first started this journey, but they won't fit the stock location. I took another look tonight and think I might be able to fabricate a wooden baffle that will accommodate the Seas. This build serves as my inspiration. I should be able to get by with a single 3/4" ring on top of the 3/4" mount surface. Anyways, I didn't have a lot of time tonight to work on it. Got some pictures below of the template and the speaker. P.S. Anyone have pointers to cutting out MDF rings? I know I've seen some around but forgot to bookmark them.

    Still looking for components

After taking another look at the OEM mounting hardware and my Seas CA18RLY, I'm going to try manufacturing a wooden baffle/mount. If my math is right, there's a good chance they'll fit. What makes those woofers so difficult to fit are the way the terminals stick way out to one side. This requires a 6" diameter opening at least 1 1/2" behind the mounting ring. I think a 3/4" mounting plate with another 3/4" ring (and maybe an extra 1/4") should be enough to clear the window track and door panel. If all else fails, I can fall back on the Peerless. But I need to at give it a shot, right?

    Still looking for components

I think I might "step down" to the Peerless 831882 5.75" woofer. It gets great reviews and will certainly fit my space. It should blend in nicely with my RL-i8's. Any last thoughts before I place the order?

    Still looking for components

Many late nights. I really want to avoid any modifications to the door panels. The car is paid off now, but I just don't feel like glassing. Has anyone tried the CDT ES-6 mids? They also look like a good fit. If I'm going to spend that $300+ dollars, I might as well get my money's worth on the woofer. I already have a good set of tweeters and no need for the crossovers.

That looks like a good suggestion. I'm not reading good things about those tweeters though. Good thing I still have my set of Seas 27TAFNC/G from Madisound. I'm not sold 100% on those CDTs yet. I'd like to get some opinions on the CDT CL-62 versus the Clarus C51-2. I think both will fit my needs and the price is similar (crushed box sale for HAT).

I've never measured the 4th generation panels, but I think that's an accurate statement. There is literally 3.25" from the inside of the door panel to the window track directly behind the speaker cavity. I deducted 1/4" from my prior estimate to account for excursion.
