SPL & SQ / Fabrication

Calculations, Concepts, Designs, Theories. All General SPL Or SQ Questions Can Be Discussed Here.

  1. I know some of you would prefer to put a JL w6v2 in a sealed box... (I'd like to go that rout if I had two subs and a powerful enough amp to push them both), but since I just have a single sub and amp I want to build a ported box. I want to make the box wedge shape so I can get the most out of my trunk. I did design a box using a 4in round port, specs: Sub is a single 12" JL audio w6v2 3/4" mdf box external lengths: height= 14.75in width= 26.0in bottom depth= 13.5in Top depth= 8.25 in 4in port, tuned to 32hz Net volume, 1.5 cu. ft. Final internal volume after adding in sub and port displacement ~1.76 cuft. I've been hearing from alot of people that I should make…

  3. I bet you'd never see me post this M5 haha anyways, ill post what im looking to do and what im working with. its my daily driver, a 2011 ford flex, with the stock Sony system, SYNC, etc. first up, HU. i dont want to replace the stock unit. its a good unit and i dont want to mess with an aftermarket one. theres a guy on the flex forum that runs a JBL MS8 with his stock unit and says its incredible. budget wise, im not going to throw a number, but i will state that i am not going to be paying like 500+ per speaker or anything crazy. this is just a daily driver and even the cheapest of a "sq" setup will sound good to me, as i mainly use pro audio in my other rides. i d…

I've been to one spl comp and it was not even a real event, just a thing where people could get on the mic's (and audiocontrol mics at that ). I live in seattle and can not find a SINGLE spl comp anywhere near here. It seems like they are all out east. Around here we have Adire and Audiocontrol as well as Sounddomain.com / cardomain.com and other names that are getting somwhat big so my question is, why no comps around here???? -aaron

  6. Just finished my new install, a 12" xcon in a 2.75ft^3 box tuned to 31hz. This is in the trunk of my 96 Accord. I listen with the seat down so the sub and port are firing into the cabin. All my boxes and setups have taught me that each setup is very different and showcase different songs better than others. The "show off" songs that sound awesome on the previous setup don't usually sound as good when you change things. I get that and accept that, but now I have a new issue. So after I got my xcon playing I was setting the gains and playing around with different songs and was not super impressed, it was loud but I knew it should be louder. so I popped the trunk to go bac…

well i was expecting a db drag. and i get there and there is like 4 judges that sat in the car to judge on overall sound. they said that my rl-p's were by far the best subs they've ever heard!!! needless to say i took first place and a $500 gift certificate to extreme motorsports. i was really wanting cash, cause i don't wanna spend any money on my car so i'll probably just end up selling it.... but either way i took first

I am looking for good SQ 12s... I have two Skar vvx 12s now and they do not sound good at all. They shake my car like crazy but I can not feel the bass inside or out of the car.. So what kind of subs should I look for to get the best SQ in my Chrysler 300? Bass I can feel and not see!

  13. I am currently looking for the best method or material that can be used inside an SPL based enclosure that can help get an extensive increase in pressure. Lots of people do different things but most follow others... Typical things tried is- sanding wood, applying resin, resanding, resin over, etc.... Ceramic tiles. Using heavy material such as marble or granite(not what i'm looking for). I am looking to find out if sanding and resining is what should be done, OR.. if laying material inside of an enclosure will yield better results. sanding and resining can lead to human error with imperfections in the smoothness and this is why i'd like to see if there are materials out …

  18. Okay new to the site. Just ordered two ICON 12's and they should be here in 3 weeks. I'm working on a ported box and needed some input if someone is willing to help. I've gone on torresbox calculator and I came up with some dimensions and would like to know what everyone thinks. Or if anyone has any suggestions. I want SQ but not where it would sacrifice SPL. It's going in an 08' Escalade. I'm pushing with a SoundQubed 2200. I have two sets of Hertz HSK 165's for up front on a PPI 900.4. I have two new Duracell Marine batteries and just did the Big 3 upgrade. Just really want to know what everyone thinks on my dimensions and how I should face the subs and port. …

im having one hell of a time trying to cut a couple 45's, do i really need them? i have some stuff to seal the edges, its not caulk though. what do i need to brace it. gonna sand it all since theres some excess glue all over the place, and my top wont fit right cause the port walls are a little taller, so i need to sand that down. and finally, will it be a problem since one sub is unloading on the port wall? comments, suggestions?

I'm thinking about getting a professional shop to design and install a setup of 2 10" Icon's for me. Reason being is that it's going into a trunk (not a show car) and I want it to be practical (able to put THINGS in the trunk again) rather than having a simple carpeted box ... I want it to look good! I'm thinking about firing in (seats can fold down), sealed off, all carpet ... They talked about covering the amplifiers ... covering my battery in the trunk ... But if I'm paying a shop, what are some options that I should inquire about? Removable plates ... Plexiglass ... Company Logos on the inside deck lid ... stealth on both sides of the trunk ... lighting ... I don't w…

I'm building a box that's, according to my calculations: 1.9959 cubic ft (not including port and .12ft^3 sub displacement), with a port area of 28.75 square in, and port length of 33 in. This box should get me about 32-33 Hz. This box is for a single 12" SI Mag that's going to be powered by a Sundown SAE-1000D. Anyway, this is only my second box build, and my box building skills ain't nowhere close to most on this forum. But I'm wondering how some of my problems will effect the actual sound of the sub. My problems lie in the port, which runs through one side of the box, and continues around the back of the box. So, these are my problems with the port: 1. The port a…

so this last weekend i went to my first ever spl competition and i didnt meter as well as i would have hoped but people were nice enough to help me out. one of the suggestions was find the right hertz for my truck. so i was hoping someone on here has a truck like or knows someone that has a truck like mine and knows the right hertz for my truck. i have a two door tahoe i have 4 12'' ppi pcx subs in a 6.5 cubic foot box with two 6'' round ports tuned at 32 hertz. i got told that i need to make a square wooden port and it needs to be at least 18'' in length i dont know if thats right or not so id thought id ask. i plan on making another new port this weekend for my next c…

I have a 99 Siverado 3 door. What I want to do is take back seat out and build a box for subs so they will be behind driver seat stacked on top of each other. Take back seat and get cut so I will still have a half seat back there. No one in my area wants to deal with it. Is this a good idea? I just want my trunk to be able to carry 3 people instead of just 2. Would a ported box still be okay on one side of truck?
