SPL & SQ / Fabrication

Calculations, Concepts, Designs, Theories. All General SPL Or SQ Questions Can Be Discussed Here.

  1. Started by manrossdamn,

I'm going to build a box for a buddy of mine that has a 1988 Camaro Iroc-Z. It's not going to be in the wheel weld as of other boxes. But right behind the rear seats. In this picture where the amp is located, there will be an enclosure for them, and it won't cover up the whole trunk area. I am going to use dual 4" Areo ports, and I was wondering how long will they have to be to have a tuning of 32-32hz. I'm thinking 1.6-8 cubes in total for both subs, and the amp I am using is a Polk Audio 4channel 800 watt amp that will be bridged to run at 4 ohms. The aim is mostly for SPL since there is no true SQ. But he would like to be able to listen to a variety of music, such as:…

Let me start off with the basics. I have an '01 Accord and I'm looking to do at least 140 on music, but the louder the better, but I want it to sound pretty good still. So, in the works is possibly a 5200, whether it will be a 15 or 18, I don't know, thats why I'm comin to you guys. I have a 170A alt, Odyssey 1200 under the hood and 2150 in the trunk. I have an RF T30001 for my amp. I'll be able to do either a 15 or 18 ported (the 18 requires 5 cubes after all displacement). THis works great for me since I fit in an enclosure that was 5.5 cubes after displacement. Whether a 15 or 18, it will fire up due to height restrictions. I'm just wanting to know what will be the di…

Like the title says, im building a new speakerbag. The fun of causing mischief at the mall and walmart n stuff has disappeared, I want this one for something easily movable, for bragging rights, but mostly as my room system. The backpack aspect makes it more fun =) I am purchasing 12 bazooka OEM 5" subwoofer/midbass drivers, and three 20wrms x2ch Class T amps. I have my two previous batteries (12v Motorcyle battery, 12.5v modem battery) to power the amps, they run on 12v. I have four 5.25" mid/highs speakers already, and will add foam baffles to finish those off If i can work them in. I'm thinking (8) 5's isobaric, sealed, w/ polyfill, in .5cuft. I'm not really looking f…

So I drive a f150 ext cab with a kicker cvx 15" with a 6 cube box tuned at 32hz. Right now it is powered by this POS sony 1200 2 channel. The first time I metered I did a 139.5 door open. I metered yesterday and the best I could do is a 137.2 The testing was done on a term lab. Now the things that changed: 4 ft shorter power wire than before - better bigger ground - better new rcas - better new bigger remote - I know this wont change anything just thought I'll throw it out there The only difference than before would be the temperature. It is roughly 35-45 degrees hotter outside now. Can the ambient temperature effect db?? Also my buddy metered too and he had a decrea…

I picked up a btl d2 for 250 tonight, and have it in 4 cubes at 32 hz. I need a box to really let it shine. I was thinking 8cubes @ 30hz. I am unsure of how much port to have though. Most likely a slot. My question is what is a good rule of thumb to go by for port area? I've heard mixed things about the 12-16in/cube rule.

so in torres i put a 23.5" length into the calcs. this gives me a 35.07hz tune with a port dimension of 23.5X4.75" and 7.07 cubic. the physical port length is 17.25 according to torres. i need to verify what my port actually is and i feel a bit confused by the measuring. if i measure the port down teh center wich is how i understand the correct measurement to me then i get 20 and 3/8" in length, then i measure horizontally to the inside of the MDF sheet wich is 3 and 1/8". so that makes the port 23.5" long down the center. if i measure on the face of the wood itself i get 18.75" long and accounting for 3/4" thickness of the port itself. on top of that it makes it 2.375…

i should have the money soon for the zcon 15 so i want to start getting ideas and thoughts on a box size for the sub. im putting it in my '95 ranger. for electric, i have a iraggi 260amp alternator, big 3, shuriken bt60 bat. and all 0 gauge wiring. i have a audioque 3500.1 that i will be running at 2 ohm (should have 2000watts which is plenty for 1 zcon 15) reason being is that it will be much easier on my electrical, and easier on the amp as well. im more for SQ on this build for those wondering. i love the low lowsss haha. i havent found any box recommendations so im looking for a bit of help. any is appreciated!

Ok, well My trunk openings are garbage, my trunk is HUGE but, I can't get a box inside the trunk from the rear or from the back seats. So, my only 2 solutions are this. 1.) I lay down plastic so I don't get anything in the back of my car, And I pre-drill the screw holes and put the box together while it is in the trunk. Only problem i see with this really, is the internal piece for the slotted port. 2.) I build the box split down the center, having a top half and a bottom half, which would be Biscuit jointed or using dowels and thenglued together in the trunk, and then over the joint external strips would be screwed into place to hold the joint together. Both of these are…

so ive never really found a concrete answer to this, but for sq is a smaller or larger box better? my 15 fi q is in a 4^3 box it is very peaky down low, with kind of weak higher bass(by higher i mean 40-55 not like midbass), and fi says 2.8-4.0 is good. my brothers 12 fi q is in a 1.8/1.9 ^3 box and it says from 1.8-2.5 and it sounds amazing and even from LOWWWW to pretty high. im assuming the smallest recommended box is good for sq/evenness, and the largest is good for spl/peakiness? (I think i just made up words!) oh btw we are both tuned about the same(31 for me 32 for him)

i will be purchasing either an IA DP 15D1 or an IA judge 15D1 and i would like to know a box recommendation for it and what tune would be good since there are no specs on here and their website. the other question is i want to fill the whole trunk with the box amp and second battery/ultracap i notice i will have a very tiny gap with the port facing the back(the trunk lid not the inside) for the ports to push air so i was going to do port and sub face up, just curious to know how much db i will lose from doing that instead of port back sub back or sub up

would a port facing the side work in a 2001 eclipse hatchback.......its about a foot away from the panel if I were to face the port to the back ....the port will only be about an inch away from the back panel.... and I don't think it will have any air flow. if I face the port to the side .....will it practically be the same as facing it to the back?

What do you guys think of the design? Its for a DC lvl 4 12'' sub How would I factor in a kerfed port to the design??? If the kerf is secured as an external portion of the port, will it affect tuning or require a change in design anywhere? Specs come to: -2 cubic feet before subs displacement -32.5hz tuning -36.25 sq inches of port area

Originally I thought my enclosure specs were very close to these, tuning and volume wise: 42W" x 22H" x 22D" - outer dimensions= 9.84961ft3 gross volume 7.3ft3 net volume tuned to 32Hz 6W" x 20.5H" for 123in2 of port area port 1-14.5" + port 2- 7" = 21.5" port length After reading through Chops end correction thread, Ive decided to do the math myself and find out what Ive really got. This is what Ive come up with. Im way off... The port length is actually 27.5". I had no idea how to measure the port. The tuning is more like 30.3Hz port volume calculation: 6W" x 20.5H"=123in2 123in2 x 27.5"=3382.5in2 3382.5in2/1728in2= 1.96ft3 of port volume 9.84961ft3-1.96ft3(port volume…

Vehicle is 2door hardtop jeep wrangler. I'm going to put 4 12" icons in, I can either have the drivers face towards the dash or up, port can face any direction (guessing i'll do rear, but perhaps front would be better for semi wall?). If I have the drivers facing the front towards dash, the box will not be a wall (there'll be ~15 inches on sides and top, around the box). This is what I was envisioning for upfiring, or just rotated and move port for front firing. Also, The box will be directly behind driver and passenger seats, and will have about 15inchs of space from rear of box to tailgate (gotta have some storage )
