Looking for some advice on a budget Home Theatre Receiver. I currently have a soundbar and sub and its not bad but would like something better, Main goal is probably for music but will also be watching movies etc but would rather it sound great on music then be amazing on Movies. Usually I would have done more research but Christmas is coming up so I need ideas for the Wife and family. Budget is max of around $400 Canadian for a decent receiver and ill pick up some used speakers and then later I will build a couple towers and a sub with separate components. Is a receiver with 70rms enough for a decent set of towers or is home audio like car audio…

  3. I have my stereo reciever and sub amp across the room from where I sit when I listen, so I use the source to control volume. However, since I never use the volume knob, the system is set to max listening volume all the time and when I unplug the aux cable I get like, obscene popping. My woofer trys to leave the box and the mids punch me in the face. How can I reduce this effect so I get a quiet connect/disconnect? I'm okay with buying a part if it's not too expensive but I have no idea what to try, and my reciever is older than me, meaning, no remote to mute it when the cord is moved. I myself know the switches and don't mind shutting it down before unplugging, but I le…

Anyone have any recommendations on a good 500+/- watt amp? I'm bringing my Fi Q 18" home and I won't be using it for car audio for a while The box was tuned to 29hz, and I don't mind if I can't hit the ultra low notes in movies, but I'll mostly use it listening to music. Thanks

  9. I was wondering if anyone had some objective data or even and explanation as to why a high end processor would sound better then a low end processor/receiver. I understand that subjective listening plays a role in what people prefer and that some audiophiles look at audio more as a hobby but is there a hardware reason that impacts sound quality? I am not talking about double blind tests and the side that states everything sounds the same but as of yet I have not found any objective data that would justify this night and day difference. I have searched the internet for sometime and found a profile on photobucket that has quite a selection of photo's, yes some people will k…

  10. First of all, sorry for the sucky photography, I realized I really need to clean the lens of my camera. I went to a friend's house yesterday because he had some Klipsch La Scalas dropped off, they're in transit to someone in TN but they made a stop here first. I hadn't heard La Scalas before, so I was curious to hear how they'd sound. Here they are: And a pair of Cornwalls to compare them to: Group shot. Behind the Klipsches are a stacked Advent pair, refoamed Acoustic Research towers, original Infinity RS1.5 bookshelves, and who knows what else. First we listened to an Audiosource Tripath amp, the black amp on top with the meters. Frankly, it sucked on the La Scalas, …

  12. So guys, i'm frustrated with my system to a certain degree, i currently have my mains as a cerwin vega e-312 pair...they're ok but the enclosure is mostly sub -tiny midrange and a tweeter. It feels like my entire ht is subsonic lol- coupled with the 2 15's subwoofers covering the lfe channel. I want more midrange and midbass particularly for music - i want to hear actual bass timbre from a guitar like a cab. I'm thinking about the eminence beta 8a's which are readily available in my country. I wanna pair em with a soft dome-dayton probably -crossed at 3k maybe. I'm not sure how to model this, I've thrown it into winisd and i'm not too sure if i trust it. But any enclosu…

So I have the following equipment I'm working with and want to build a new HT sub. Right now I have a Mach 5 MJ18 on a Parts Express 500 watt plate amp. I think it's around 6 cubes tuned to mid to upper 20's, not sure anymore. The box design isn't working with my new arrangement so I want to build something new. Basically I'm looking for opinions on if I should use the MJ18 again or use the pair of Sundown sd1 12's that I have. What would you do in my situation? I need somewhat of a multi purpose setup. It would be used for music, movies and video games but mostly leaning towards music.

  16. Got all of the pics up from HES this past weekend. Some absolutely insane setups there. The biggest surprise of the show in my eyes were the Silverline Minuets that cost $600 per pair. If I didn't have my Maggies at home I would have bought a pair on the spot. I'm usually not a big fan of bookshelf speakers, but the Minuets were just stunning in every way. Tons of over the top and uber expensive eye candy as well. Finally got to hear the Cabasse La Sphere's in person as well. Nothing like dropping $150,000 on speakers... Oh and Jim, more tube amps than I have ever seen in my life. The Wilson room was pitch black except for the tubes glowing, it was absolutely beautiful…

Correct me if I'm wrong: But isn't line-level = line-level??? I could have an CD diskman go into a old car tape deck (with the aux jack in the front) into a home amp; it doesn't change the fact that it's line-level? And thus: http://www.mobileaudio.com/rac-faq/rac-faq_5.html#SEC106 That applies to any line-level signal... ...correct?

Well, ive been crusing around her for a while and i think i discovered a enclosure id LOVE to build. Im debating on building a TL enclosure for either one 10" or a single 8". to top it off i kinda want to do it as cheap as i can(i know i know, audio, cheap, HAH.). I think i found my amp and sub, but i need the opinions of seasoned builders. Ive only played with car audio before so this home theater stuff is newer to me, i have a sub-par setup going, but nothing fancy. But my substage is lacking, so i need something with a little more "oomph". Amp choice is a Audiofile VRS 1205 from www.alexjr.com (http://www.apexjr.com/Audiofile.htm) and the sub i have yet to really decid…

Just kinda throwing this out there...but for christmas my family is doing a secrete santa deal... with the rules being for the person you pick, you buy them one or multiple gifts that add up to one hundred dollars. I got my older brother this year... and one of the things on his list was a home stereo amplifer for surround sound. Car audio is more my thing, but home stereo stuff... I have nooo clue. Is there anything somewhat decent that I could get him for like $100 or less? If not, he has plenty of other things on his list. Thanks to all who can help me, and an early merry christmas to all!!

I don't have any clue what it is called, but i recall a program for the computer with a series of microphones that listen to a given song or test track and give a top view of the sound waves throughout the room. I am trying to figure out what it is, so we can dial in the system my church currently owns. Thanks! -Chris

  22. Due to the purchase of my first real TV, I am venturing into digital to digital signal. The TV has no RCA outs, so my Dayton 2.1 plate amp couldn't directly mate up with my TV. With some help of Neal and SDY, there was an option for a converter or amp replacement. Due to potential latency issues with the signal conversion and possible effect on the quality of the sound, I opted for a new little amp. So I just ordered the SMSL Q5 PRO as it has optical in, a remote, and RCA out. https://www.parts-express.com/smsl-q5-pro-stereo-amplifier-usb-optical-coaxial-dac-with-subwoofer-output-2x40w--230-210 This gives me the ability to still use the plate amp for just subwo…

Ok so so I just got my own house, move in tomarrow, but I need a killer HT. I have a Kenwood reciever, 2 mtx cabinets, maybe some other cabinets, and my 10" ssd that I just bought back yesterday. What I need to know is how can I porew the sub? What amp or power supply should I buy for it? I was thinking about building a Tline box for the sub. Will be for movies and PS3, but also lots and lots of music. I want a Nice clear sq setup, not so "bassy", but enough bass to hear and tell that it is there. I don't need a lot of power maybe 200-300 watts. This is first "real" HT project so I'm just lookin for some help. Thanks, Mikey

Has anyone used non-stick backed real wood veneer? Im about to attempt using it for the first time, just wondering if you have any tips about working with it that would be helpful going in. Better to use a 1/4" flush-cut or a 1/2" etc? Brand of glue? also..when doing the rounded edges..should i glue the veneer to the face, let it dry. then, wrap the veneer around the edges..or should i just glue and wrap the the whole thing right away..the pic shows a 3/4" round on a previous pair to give you an idea, the one's im attempting have a 1" roundover.
