I have a 98 mustang with a trunk wall not yet sealed with two 12" ethos on a bc3500 at 1 ohm with stock 130 amp alt and two batteries. The box is a 3 cu. ft. box net tuned to 28 hz. I hit a max of 140.18 @ 43hz. with the driver door open. First time ever on a meter.

So to start, like my other review, here is my Review. Below, is a picture taken, one of my favorites, from Slamology 2014. I should start off by saying, this should NOT be an review, yes I've named the thread Review, but it should be more of an first impressions. The reason being, I've only had one weekend play time with them. Ok so to start off, my installation consist of 6 15" DSS Ethos powered by 3 Taramp HD8000, at this review 2 Taramps. Back up by 10 batteries and a single H/o Alternator. Again, I must stress that, these subs have never been played. Truck was running at 4pm Friday afternoon, and I was demoing Friday evening at 11pm. Ok, no the First Impressio…

First let me start by saying my enclosure was not built for doing big numbers in mind, its a music box that plays damn near like a HT setup. This is strictly for fun and because the Ethos had to come out because I'm selling it to offset cost of the bigger build. My friend let me use his SP4 that is less than a year old until I pull it all out. The enclosure 3.65cu net tuned at 29hz with 44sqin of port. The amp and power Crescendo BC2000, 225amp alt and two group 34 batteries. Ethos 15 Dual 2ohm (wired at 1ohm) only pulling a max 60 amps of current according to the fluke clamp. SP4 fully loaded Dual 1ohm (wired at .5 ohm) pulling a max 83 amps of current I installed my E…

...after all you are the ones who will be buying them. These frames will be used for subwoofers with an xmax of 30mm or larger and will handle massive motors. One of the motors samples I have coming is pushing 100lbs. They will be Osd (oversized sd) to allow for massive xmax and retain sd. After all what's the point if high excursion 12 if you have the sd of an 8. The below sketches are of what the frames might look like (have to do a few mods for added features. This frame has and OD of 12.5 inches and will allow a surround of 2.75 inches wide and still keep the same amount of sd as typical cones being used on current 12 spoked bakets. It has enough clearance for…

I came home to a nice surprise today. I saw Quentin had a lay away plan so I took advantage! Ethos 15. This is so much bigger in person. It needs to be seen in person to really appreciate. Far bigger than I had used previously. Extremely well built. You can see great care was taken on the glue joints and little other details. Nice finishes and large diameter flat wound coil. My son Nico wanted to take it for a spin.

Quentin I was wondering if the run of ethos that are coming in October will have any changes compared to the previous Ethos. I know you had talked about and showed pics of the new surrounds, will those be used on the ones built in October. Is there any other planned changes, Also what is the cost for dual leads instead of single leads? Thanks in advance for the info.

Yeah, that was a pretty bad Topic Title. He he. My bad. Any ways, I took advantage of the DSS deal, picking up a few woofers, and man are my arms tired..... Enough with the bad jokes, here are some pics. I was a little worried about that one box, but everything checked out good. All lined up and ready for action. A couple of motor shots. Not my best work, but still and impressive sight. This will be the first time I run four subs in a single setup. Stay tuned for a build log coming to a forum near you. These subs look great. A+ build quality. All the glue joints look solid with no excess glue. No weak spots were revealed when pushing up from the ba…

Pulled one sub out to use it to test some amplifiers and one of the terminals read 6.2ohms.. So, measured the lead, 1.56ohms. Measured right under the heatshrink where it goes to the terminal, still 1.56ohms. So, i started pushing up and down on the terminal spring and it dropped to 3.0ohms. Did it some more, 2.1ohms. Did it some more, 1.7ohms. Will not go any lower than that. What could be causing this? It will be a while before i have time to test the rest but i may have to tie the main supply wire to the terminal and to the lead after cutting off heat shrink to ensure i get lowest impedance possible.

Klippel testing was performed to verify BL linearity. Testing came out good but I'm gonna try a 12 layer coil before I proceed with production. The current coil is 8 layer flat aluminum with 50mm winding width. This coil will work fine with the current soft parts limiting the driver to ~35mm xmax which will take ~2,500 watts rms to hit. However when I get my new soft parts made allowing ~50mm - 55mm one way xmax it will need ~3,500 watts to reach xmax and I'm not comfortable using the current coil with that much power. Below is the BL curve. It is prematurely cut off due to hitting suspension limits. It should remain nearly constant to 37.5mm. Still with the cu…

Hello everyone. I was searching around and ran across the 15" ethos and it has really caught my eye. Looks like a great quality woofer and the fact that it likes small enclosures is awesome. I have been wanting a 15" but couldn't seem to find enough room for one because most seem to like 4 cu ft. Now on to my question. I was reading on the dss site that the recommended enclosure is a 3 cu ft tuned to 32 hz. What threw me off was the suggested port area of 75 in sq. I understand all woofers are different and require a different amount, but this seems like a lot. My question is would I be able to reduce the amount of port area by some without any negative effects on SQ and …

Future products will have the option to monitor coil temperature in real time. This may be a desirable feature for people in comps running tons of power. Temperature sensing will be done with a tyke K thermocouple imbedded into the topplate a couple millimeters away from the coil. This can be used with any Type K thermometer.

I'll try to put this in Laymen's terms as much as possible. I will not go into hand calculating as it is tedious and the tables are too much to copy here. To hand calculate purchase a copy of the Loudspeaker Cookbook. I use the calculator on Car Stereo's site as it is close to doing it by hand. http://www.carstereo.com/help/Articles.cfm?id=27 The reference for the following in formation: Vance Dickason, "Loudspeaker Design Cookbook 7th Edition," Audio Amateur Press,2006. DEFINITIONS. A sealed rear chamber bandpass enclosure is basically a closed-box system with the addition of an acoustic filter in series with the front radiation of the driver. TERMS. fb = tun…

All current orders will go out as normal. New orders form here forward will be delayed for about two or so weeks. I am in the process of having all my motors and more than enough parts shipped to my shop so I can minimize lead time. The goal is to get far enough ahead that drivers will ship next day. Please excuse the wait while I make the transition. Also I am working with a local company to come up with a custom package solution so no damages will occur during shipping.

I've received several emails and PM's on how I create my spider packs. I needed to make some more jigs to keep up with production so I figured I'll show how I do it. The spiders I use do NOT lay flat they must be pressed. This is how they look stacked. This is the bottom portion of the jig. It has cut outs for the spider to lay into along with cut outs for the leads. I put a bead of glue around the outside and the inside diameter of the spider. It doesn't take much just a small bead. Then they are stacked on top of each other. In this case 4. Note that NO accelerator is used ONLY CA glue. Then the top goes on and is tightened down with the bolt and…

I will be giving shirts to competitors that will be running DSS product. Since y'all will be wearing them I want to make sure y'all approve. I know some of y'all are pretty big guys, will 4x suffice? I am thinking something along the lines of the below pic. The red would be blue, DSS logo will be on the back and front pocket and if you like your name would be embroidered on the front.

I need help creating a product list for Direct Speaker Supplies to carry. I already have just about everything to recone subwoofers on its way. The problem is I have accounts with just about every distributor you can think of and combined they have tens of thousands of parts. So I'd like to know if there is a special item that you would need. Maybe something no one else carries or they do and it's just too expensive. For example maybe you would like to purchase the really nice high nap carpet I use on my enclosures. Give me a list of what you think would be priority, that must have hard to get item. NOTE I WILL NOT BE CARRYING ANY PRODUCT LIKE AMPS OR SPEAKERS (B…

I know you won't be able to handle all of the pure awesomeness that is the Magnetar at one time so I'm going to ease you into it. The sample SPL coils have be meticulously inspected, packed, and shipped to the build house for assembly. If you feel any small tremors in the coming weeks just keep calm its just the guys at the build house charging all of the magnets housed in the 96 POUND motor. For your viewing entertainment a few pics and maybe even a few videos down the road will be view-able. For now here are the coils: The itty bitty coil is the Ethos which is 4 layers has windings that are ~2 3/8 inches tall and uses 19 gauge alluminum wire and is rated for 1…
