    If you want to start somewhere start with picking up some books. Loudspeakers are physics. Mass on a spring driven by an electrodynamic motor. If you have a general working knowledge of how a loudspeaker functions from a design standpoint and why, you'll have much less "trial and error" and more "trial and experience". No offense, but I don't think Scott/Nick, David or Jacob will have the type of time (and probably patience as a result) it would require to try to mentor someone, for free, about the ins and outs of loudspeaker design when they have companies to operate, subwoofers to build and their own designs and ideas to work on. It's not something you can take an afternoon crash course on and be able to walk out and start designing subwoofers. It's not that simple, too many variations and things to take into consideration. You need to learn on your own first. Once you perform some research on your own, read some books and gain some knowledge I think you'll realize you'll be able to answer a lot of your own questions. Also no offense, but the whole "custom sub" craze currently going on is one of my huge pet peeves. Soooooo many people tossing together random parts with absolutely zero idea about the resulting creation.
  2. Best suggestion I've seen so far. I also agree with your sealed decision given the variety you listen to. I listen to everything from classical, to rap, to metal, to dance and I've found sealed enclosures best for my tastes, but I always have a stout mid-bass setup.
  3. Hmmm. Care to share more on that location??? Having a '02 Camry with the 2AZ-FE engine this does not exist. The 2AZ-FE Camry is a drive by wire. The 1MZ-FE was a drive by cable but not on the 2AZ-FE. You're unfortunately stuck with the low RPM unless you purposefully modify the IAC which can and most likely throw the PCM off for when it adjusts. The car idles anywhere from 550~ to 650~ with a 2" pulley on the alternator will idle at around 2,000 alternator RPM with your A/C on at 650 Engine RPM and 1,650 alternator RPM at 550 Engine RPM. Sorry for the bad news.

  5. They have always been really slow for me. I have always recieved the product in perfect condition. I have had better luck with Sonic Electronix. I don't shop at those stores anymore, just the SSA store now!

What is it about a sealed box that you don't want to design and build? all you have to do is figure out what usable space you have the dimensions you need to achieve 1 cubic foot after displacement. the alpine amp is a good little amp that will power your 12 great. it just doesn't leave any room to grow if you ever want to add another 12. you can easily purchase all that for under $500. it would also be a good sounding setup. The only question is, why not go ported? you can make a ported sub blend well with a quality front stage (mb quart being one of them).

There certainly is a Déjà vu aspect to all of this. 6 years ago it was common practice for sellers of asphalt products to either call them butyl or use the less dishonest but completely misleading "rubberized compound". It took considerable effort to get the new owner of the company selling product in this thread's title to remove the word "butyl" from his Web site. It was still on his eBay ads, the last I checked. The point is, why would sellers of asphalt products want to mislead consumers about what their product was made of? Why don't any of them use the honest term "asphalt"? They may claim that bastards like me have prejudiced the market but they were doing this before I showed up. More importantly, if there was a legitimate argument in favor of asphalt, why not make it with pride? There is only one reason anyone would try to confuse the public like this and it isn't flattering. The sad thing is that this argument obscures some very important considerations. The reality is that butyl that isn't formulated for vibration damping doesn't perform any better than asphalt - it's just less likely to fail. Even if a butyl compound is ideal for vibration damping, it won't perform any better than asphalt if it isn't paired with a sufficiently robust constraining layer. I learned early on that the people endorsing products I knew didn't work very well had very limited experience with other products. To a very real extent you only have to hold a variety of material in your hands to see and feel the huge differences between them. It's not rocket science. Using a product and getting some improvement is easy to misinterpret - slightly better than nothing becomes great! How many forum posts have we all seen where someone describes using P&S for years, then trying a purpose built vibration damper and being wowed? Very common. How often have we seen someone go the other way and conclude that asphalt was the better choice? I haven't seen any. After everything is said and done, even with a great vibration damper in hand, we still haven't dealt with it's proper role - one product doesn't do everything.

    I think I will have to get an "SP4 vs ...insert Fi sub here..." post going, but Ill summarize here too. SP4 Heavier SP4 More mounting depth SP4 4" coil vs 3" on N2 SP4 10" spider and higher mechanical linearity than N2 SP4 More long term thermal stability SP4 Sealed capable vs N2 ported only N2 More motor force N2 Inductance ring that balances the inductance swing better SP4 Slightly lower overall inductance than N2 N2 Well... its cool because its Neo N2 It's expensive because its Neo (and constantly increasing in cost) SP4 Slightly higher Xmax (coil limited) SP4 Lower FS for those that think it matters In general we created the N2 as the replacement for the older generation BTLs. We have seen the direction people are going with the BTLs and arranged the N2 specs to be closer to intended applications (huge, deep hitting, daily setups). Then creating the N3 to fill the void for the high motor force applications like extreme SPL or simply those that like that "sound". The SP4 pushes things a little further in the daily driver direction. While the N2s have proven to work well in 4th orders, they simply don't in sealed. The SP4 does just that, and a little better than the N2 in 4ths. It still works great in ported, with the ability to have a heavier peak down low as well. In testing it is a very solid sub that can take quite a bit of abuse. While not needed (none of the original test drivers we built had it) we do have the option for spaced spiders (2 on the top and 3 on the bottom) with a 1" ring between. In this configuration we have hand sewn on leads in between the spiders. In its standard configuration with 5 spiders and the gapped cone, it is a very stable platform (not a triple jointed sub. The cone is spaced about 1.125" from the top of the spiders. This stabilizes the coil better than the standard triple joint and is what we are doing on the standard versions of the SSD, Q, and BL drivers now). I think the SP4 is in keeping with the times and applications people are heading towards. High excursion, stability, and thermal power handling... albeit at a cost of weight and depth over the N2 series.

    This is about as shady as it can get. + they sell skar and sundown? and pretty much every other thing from 1800woofers and then on SMD it seems like if he has acess to MalibuOn22's account over there. I doesnt matter to me how many businesses Kevin is dealing with or owns. As long as my business dealings with him are honest then I will continue to buy from him. I also know that nobody is perfect, including myself , a couple hiccups here and there will happen. As far as I know Skar is a subsidiary of Sundown. Obsidian is too. From a business perspective, his deallings with forum members on SMD are meaningless to me. Skar has no ownership attachments to sundown and is owned by Kevin, and has nothing to do with Jacob as far as company goes. Jacob plays more of a consultant role in the SKAR business. Just to clear things up for you guys.... Ah, thanks for clearing that up.
