Fi at SBN Daytona and delays
Fi will be at SBN Daytona March 23-25th. We will have shirts and stickers for those that stop by (until we run out ) Come hear your favorite song and head cracking levels with the Fi Bassrace Crew... not too mention the insane SPL numbers being turned in the Drag lanes. ****During this period we will have people working production at the factory, but with reduced staff on hand, you might experience an extra day or two of build time**** Sorry Thanks, Scott

Xmax of loaded BTL
Mellow out people...sheesh. I like this place because we NEVER have the need to flex mod powers or have snide comments. Im definitely not a fan of pissing matches, but apparently since Im a hot race horse (per another post ), Ill assume I can pee like one too. Per FEA it comes in at 26.7mm. With rounding up it is 27, rounding down it is 26. 1mm would never make a difference in this case and is safe to say that coil deviations at the ends for lead out would have enough one way or the other as well. Along the lines of JimJ... its nie to have Xmax, but if the balance of the specs dont fit the application, it really doesnt matter much if it moves more. Thanks... Scott

Any new products coming out?
I like it. I know its drawbacks and abilities fairly well in having used it on a few drivers and having played with it LOTS in the past couple of years. It is being used for a new lineup for a HT company I do OEM for and Im sure itll make its way into other products Thanks... Scott

Coil option question SSD & Q
Its not that they cant be incorporated together, its just that in many instances it creates way too much weight. There really isnt a point to making a flatwind copper coil that weighs 400 grams, just to do it if it doesnt have a benefit (especially for the extra cost). And making one that has similar weight and sizing to the current round wire copper coils so that it has optimal benefits for TS params... is somewhat of a waste as well. We try to optimize things for cost and performance. Doing it just to do it really doesnt make much sense... kind of like adding a 3rd magnet to the older X series as an option and charging more for it simply because we can. Doesnt do anything, so we dont have it. We are working on more options for drivers, but we want to make sure that they provide a solid difference or gain before we offer them. I can add 50 different things to the lists simply to "hook" people and rack up some extra $$$s per sale. But I wouldnt be happy if I purchased an option that really didnt do anything. So far, the things we have available have been thoroughly tested and are known to make a real difference in performance or application. All future additions will do the same thing. Along the lines of "updating" current drivers too... I will try to make most options retrofitable as well. Obviously if we produce a machining option, you cant add that to a preassembled driver, but as far as coils, spiders, and other palnned items, they will all be able to be used in current subs (provided that the "universal" option is selected or that the coils you have were gapped correctly or close enough for the newer coils). Im not designing new coils that are larger than the current "universal" gap. Really wouldnt see a benefit in doing so, and I also want to keep things swapable as well. Thanks... Scott

mrray13... no need to get pushy Email me your address and shirt size ([email protected]). I know you have contributed WAY more than what was required for a non-owner. Ill get a list from Nick and Shawn shortly of all of the people that have completed the task and have PMd or emailed them... then cross reference it what I have so far. For those that we do not have complete info on, we will try and contact or post their names on the forum so that they can get us an address and shirt size. I have 7 people so far that have sent me info and have been checked as "good to go". Ill get their shirts/stickers packed and shipped by Monday. Thanks and have a good weekend, Scott

Any new products coming out?
Curt, Nope... the third company (OEM) I am referring to is another business I own and do OEM and consulting work for the HT market. Not an overseas supplier. But, the drivers will remain the exact same as I mentioned earlier for the HT guys. I will change things up and produce a similar driver but with a different basket and physically geared more towards mobile audio. Dont fear... the poly 6.5 as you know it will be around for quite some time. I am very fond of the design (I had a "little" say in it ) Thanks, Scott

Free stuff :)
I need to make an addendum to this post later today stating that when you complete the task (or feel you have and want us to check) please be sure to PM or email us with your account name, real name and address, along with your shirt size. We have received quite a few of them in emails with no info attached whatsoever... and its hard to try and match things up without it. We will be packing up and shipping out the first batch of them over this weekend. So to those that have already given full info and completed it, you should probably have a shirt in the mailbox next week Thanks, Scott

Sir Scott

Any new products coming out?
ngsm13... why thank you... I think I am no longer affiliated with DeStijl. I sold that at the beginning of 2006. Fi and Ascendant are two completely separate companies. Its a little complicated to say how things are set up (as legalities make it complicated to cover your butt under all circumstances). While there are actually 3 companies involved, there really is only one set of people building them. Completed Fi products stay where they are currently being made (albeit for only a couple hours before they are shipped out). Completed Ascendant products will move to separate building for warehousing and shipping. And the third company is for OEM and consulting work (so as not to burden either Fi or Ascendant legally with other OEM work). So for the most part, if you tried to contact any of the 3 companies, you would pretty much get me Fi will always be a direct only company. Ascendant will be a dealer based company with 1 online sales outlet. The other company you probably dont need to worry about unless you have a need for HT OEM work. Thanks, Scott

Just purchased a 12" BL
Takes a little trial and error as I have run across different "qualities" of MDF. Id try a small piece first to see how close you need to kerf cut things. Steve seemed to use wood glue, and Im sure that the modern "expanding" glues out there would work great. I used to put tape on the edges of the cuts and fill with resin before I bent things. Solidified them quite well. Box looks a little odd on the port section of things. Will there be dead space there as well? Can you MS Paint a quick side shot of how the port will look in the box? Thanks, Scott

Any new products coming out?
Short answer...Nope. The more time passes, the more I see the niche market that Fi is working its way into. I feel customers and the company is better suited cultivating that and only doing subs... and more options Ascendant will have all of the above... much of the work I have dont for Fi will transfer over to that. Seems to make more sense for a dealer based company that will move more products... to spend the $$$ on some nice tooling. We will get the original poly 6.5s rolling again, and then update them with a new tooled basket a few months after to integrate a grill and and be a little more car audio oriented with its sizing (HT guys dont fear... we will keep the original basket as a standard item as well) Ascendant, down the road a little, will have 2 component sets as well as some coaxes (market demands them). Thanks, Scott

FI SSD 12 D1 Copper Coils
Thanks for the review. Im figuring you were the one I sent out the D1 copper proto coils to... as I did make one for a customer(and with my awful memory at this point, I couldnt tell you who it was if my life depended on it). I need to get them up on the web shortly as well since I was very happy with the results in testing (worked just like the original D2s). Thanks, Scott

Sealed sub box dimensions calc. and reduction help?!?!?
Im getting red Xs for the pics right now, so I cant really check the enclosure sizing. But if its a trapezoid, with the top and bottoms being different sizes, but width and height being equal, then you simply do W X H X ((Top + Bottom)/2) in inches... then divide by 1728 to give you the volume in cuft. I absolutely love the box. That has to be the nicest drop in Ive ever seen... and like you said, he is doing quite a bit of business with those. At .7cuft per chamber, you are looking at .58 after displacement which will yield a .59 Qtc. Most people will find this too low for their tastes, although I tend to like .7 and lower Qtc sealed alignements. Very smooth and natural sounding. Shrinking things down to .33 cuft yields a .71 Qtc which is maximally flat. Like I mentioned before... most people like a higher Qtc .9-1 since it tends to emphasize/exxagerate things a little more. But at that point, you would really be choking the enclosure down. As ///M5 mentioned, drop them in as is and listen. You might find yourself liking them in the standard space (if you have a very solid midbass up front). Noting your initial impressions of them, then listening for a couple of days, see if you need things to "tighten" up some or not. If you do, you can shrink the enclosure up by adding either solid layers of MDF (which weighs a bit and Im figuring in that car you dont want to load it down), small empty MDF boxes (1/2" MDF is plenty for something like this). Large pieces of closed cell foam (syrofoam blocks would be fine and add minimal weight), or whatever you can stuff in their that is "solid" to take up space. You are in the opposite position from most people. Usually people are trying to stuff too large of a driver in too small of a space and dealing with a high Qtc. You can lower the Qtc some by using polyfill to stuff the enclosure and this maxes out at 1 lb per cuft and about a 15% increase in perceived enclsoure volume increase and the resulting Qtc change. If you have any other questions, let me know. Thanks, Scott

Building/Shipment Status
I will check first thing tomorrow morning on your sub. I just got back into town (left Thursday night) and Im not exactly sure what all got shipped out Friday. We did have about 20 subs that should have been finished up and packed on Friday... so I wouldnt doubt it if yours was in with that. I expect that it had either shipped, or if it hasnt, was packed and will be ready to go with out first UPS pick up tomorrow. We are busy, but not 3X behind on dates by any means. We had one guy out Thursday and Friday with the flu... and another that will be out for this whole week as his wife had a baby on Sat (Congrats by the way ) We will get back on track ASAP, as its just a little matter of jockeying some peoples tasks around and me working more hours on the machines. Ill keep you posted. Thanks, Scott

my box for 15" Q
The bracking is somewhat in an odd position (being that it is attached and in front of the port. But jusdging by the openness of everything, Id say it will probably be OK. Normally you dont want to stick anything in front of a port (for air flow reasons). Thanks, Scott Fi Car Audio

theabunai... (2) topics, 1 with A and 1 with B. We are trying to keep things separate... for people to be able to search for the subs they are interested in, or for the car they have and see what others have done in them. For your current review simply edit the title to "2 SSD 12" and you are good to go Baggedbirds.com... I know I got my SMD work shirt We currently have the ultra plain shirts available, but I havent posted any new info about them since the day of the forum crash (they are $12 for a S-XL shipped in the US and $13 for a 2X). Ill get more info up on how to order them shortly. For now Id rather save a good chunk of this batch for forum freebies for posting. I have another shirt designed and done(more elaborate than this ultra plain one)... but I havent made a run of them yet. Thanks, Scott

OK, as many of you know the forum crashed during an update and we lost the past 6 months worth of posts and info. This forum is such a valuable tool for customers, new and old, to post questions, reviews, and use as a database to search from. So... I want things built back up and fast. I am hammering out all the details of what this little contest will be and how exactly all the free stuff will be handed out... shirts/stickers. But it looks like it will boil down to this: 1. For those with Fi products: A. Start a detailed topic with description of your system using Fi subs... pics (are a must even if they are off a bad camera phone), enclosure design, amps(s) used and any other info you feel would be helpful. B. Start a separate detailed review of the sub detailing good bad and ugly about it. C. Post 10 more messages in any topics of the forum (at least 2 of which have to be in other forums besides Fi too...) And you will get a Fi shirt and a couple of stickers... 2. For those without Fi products Id like to see: A. Start 5 topics (1 of which has to be in another forum besides Fi). I dont want to see "Pigs in a blanket are better than French toast", or "I like to pee".. I want to see topics relevant to car audio and that they could turn into something useful and productive. We are trying to rebuild what we had... not simply bump up the post count on on the forums. B. Post 20 more messages in any topics on the forum (at least 4 of which have to be in other forums besides Fi too...) And you will get a Fi shirt and a couple of stickers... ****NOTES: Please follow the info below on "how" to post the topic. The reason we are doing things this way is that there will be sticky on how to search for info from this forum database... and it will make things MUCH easier for everyone. Please state what subs and how many you have. IE: 2 SSD12 or 1 BTL 18. I am not as concerned with the specifics of the subs (copper coil, pole chamfer... blah blah blah. You can get to that in the review. Just that it is in an easy to follow standardized format that can easily be searched from. Same goes for the instal, just go by the car... Honda Accord or Ford Expedition. Not the specifics... just an easily searchable title. Then you can detail things from there. For a great example of how to write a review, please check out http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/forum/i...?showtopic=7135 Once you feel that you have accomplished your mission (and all posts have to be after the crash date of Feb 21st) you can PM Shawn, Nick, or myself to check and see if you met the requirements. Ill then get your info and get you out a package. For the forum member that contributes what Shawn, Nick, and I feel is the most valuable contribution (could be the most amount of useful posts and topics... or a single post that saves the world) to the SSA forums will receive a $250 credit towards Fi products. The details of this may change and evolve some over the next day or two but feel free to start. For those that have posted reviews already since the crash... your topics/posts count towards a shirt. So please check back and tell your friends and anyone else that might be interested. Thanks... Scott and all at Fi.
