Welcome to the IHoP
Love this new GM CEO, and his new delusional add where he is walking through a design shop. If there was any point in GM's history, now is not the time to be saying that their cars win head to head against any one.

I usually post on more than 5 sites at a time too. This is what I call relaxation. Every time I try to tell myself that I need to reduce the number of sites, I seem to find another. Trying not to join AVS.

But we have this great "family" like atmosphere here where people can open up a little and get their crap off their chests or mind.

Different options for the IXL
dubbreak makes some great points. I answer a great deal of emails and PM's from people who are so worried about matching the rms ratting of the sub woofer and the ratting of the amplifier. What I think needs to be stressed is proper gain setting and focusing on the goals and less on just a few limited specs.

Box advice
Let's forget the possible measured db output for now. You need to provide a great deal more info on you goals and system. You need to explain if that is 16 cubes total, as in before port and driver displacement? I bring that up because in a system that what I guess you are going for, is that it would be better to use the smaller driver in a proper box, then a larger driver in a box to small for it.

Searching for subwoofers
In most cases, go active from the head unit. My PRS880 did very well active, and I preferred having the controls on the head unit, then having them on a secondary unit or amp. Part of the confusion here is you want a sound quality system and what big time output. What many of the experienced members and/or industry people here will tell you is having a balanced system is the direction to head towards for a goal of sound quality. What you are after sounds like you want something loud that does not sound bad, but not technically a sound quality system. I know a few people did not understand on one of my prior installs, where I was running a 2-way active and single sub install, and I had more power going to my mids and highs then my sub. What confused people even more was that the output was much more then expected. Part of the issue about rear-fill, is that if you are using such a big amp, and want to use higher output drivers, is that during normal play, 9 times out of 10, it will be just you in the car listening to your music. So think about it for a moment, when you see live music, the sound comes from in front of you, not behind you. And this is your money, your system, it is not meant to entertain rear seat passengers. At least that is how I see it, along with a few other people on here. Anyway, you mention about saving some cash. I suggest running a quality 2-way active front stage with the crossover points and slopes set on the head unit, being powered by a quality 4-channel amplifier. Then have your AX amp, and sub(s). As for subs, yes I am a little biased, but I will refrain from speaking on eD and RD, as there are plenty of people who know better. The prior generation RE XXX were a very good driver, they still fetch big time money used. I look forward to test the newer model. As for the CM driver, it make be quite capable, but I have not seen someone justify the pricing of them. So that should explain my lean towards the Xcon, but I am biased, and for good reason. Anyway, let's address you entire set up and not just the sub woofer. This is the difference between the SSA forum and all the other pretender forums.

Thanks, but I am not buying out of state any time soon. Maryland used car racket, err inspection process, is very difficult to bring a car in from out of state with out getting railed with bogus costs and insane inspection requirements. So if I were to buy a used sled, I need to buy it in state with an MD inspection. The the 300D's run forever, and I have wanted one for a while. I almost bought an old 240D a few years ago to get 40mpg back and forth to DC, except it needed a little work I did not want to do, and a non-turbo 4cylinder diesel in a heavy steel intensive car equals very slow. I just love the old I-6 w124 chassis MB's. Super solid structure, one gen before they went everything electro-nutty, safe, plenty of space, and classy. My sisters trusty 92 300E is still doing great in DC. It just needs a serious detail job. Only thing major she has needed was a radiator the rest has been normal upkeep. The old big body diesels are worth good money and they will and seem to run well into 400k easy.

Are you just looking to get loud for cheap? Or do you want some clarity and balance to your system?

Well my wife's old one was a trusty little car that was cheap to keep on the road. In a time when I don't have the pockets to swing a used 3 series wagon that I want, something small like that would be nice. Beyond a total PITA to put Arthur's car seat in and out of the sled. Plus, because the seat is one of the uber safe huge car seats, he sits up a little high so I cannot put the passenger seat back. So a little 4door is badly needed. If I did not catch so much heat from the wife for keeping it, I would have fixed the explorer to cart junior around for a little while longer until I can get a 4door. Just real quick imagine what I look like sitting in that car. It may be American designed, but not for us normal sized Americans. Open the sun roof. - Welcome to the IHoP
