Welcome to the IHoP
I'm about to do that myself.

The voltage of the vehicle has NOTHING to do with the amplifier gain. They have nothing to do with each other, so it is not only impossible but makes zero sense to set the amplifier gain correctly using it. The voltage you measure is from the outputs of the amplifier. As in the things you hook the speaker up to. If you'd like to read how this works, there have been various threads on that topic already. Use the search feature to find them. You'll have to wire the voice coils of your sub in series on the JL.- 91 Geo Metro + Fi + Audiopipe
I guess I'm just too used to my 1/0 now, ha.- RE Audio
I was thinking about adding my input until you said that. Now, nope.- componets?
What kind of sound are you looking for? Do you have a preference on tweeter material? How deep can the mids be?- Noob status i know.
yea i'm a little nervous :/ whats the best way to set the gain?..the guy i talked to said he sets the gains by the voltage..but i don't have any voltage problems from a 250/1 so i'm thinking hes going to say crank the gain all the way up but then i know it will start clipping. isn't an ollioscope the best way? If I'm understanding you right, you have the voltage thing misconstrued. He doesn't mean set the gain by voltage of the vehicle (from the battery), like when it starts to dip your gain is right. He means measure the output voltage on the amplifier's speaker terminals, then use a formula to determine how much power it is putting out. That way you can tell when it's putting out 250 watts. I'd be a lot more worried about blowing the amp due to overdriving it than the sub.- 91 Geo Metro + Fi + Audiopipe
What size is your power wire? It looks too small.- Welcome to the IHoP
Stupid sore throat woke me up a lot last night.- Got a new rig!
How in the world did you get that gem for that price (looks like an '00?)? Definitely nice work. Why did the previous owner(s) never drive it? I have a black '98 XLT with the SOHC V6. 178k, haha. But he looks and runs basically like new.- Amp Wiring Question....
That's what I'd do.- What voltage to set gain to?
Don't worry, I can tell the difference between clean bass and distorted bass, especially with the Mag. I haven't blown a subwoofer in 10 years even with amps rated up to twice the sub's RMS.- Welcome to the IHoP
I live on the second story of my townhouse and the neighbors were behind the place making noise last night at about 9:00. I kinda wanted some peace and quiet and I almost yelled down "Go away, 'batin!"- My trash system. Really in need of improvement!
Speakers on the window sill, hehe. You may want to separate them so that you get the stereo effect.- Building a Subwoofer
Well that's a tough one. I've never heard either driver, so hopefully somebody who has can give their input. However, the Shiva-X uses the XBL^2 motor, which is a very low distortion motor. My Mag v.4 employs it and it sounds very clean. However, the IXL may be able to go lower a little easier. Not sure how much you'd notice though. I think you'll be happy with either.- Max wattage for Xcon
It depends on your box. They may take 2500 watts thermally, but depending on the box that may rip apart the soft parts or bottom the voice coil due to overexcursion.- What voltage to set gain to?
I'd just set it with my eyes and ears and be done. There will be so much variability in songs you'll listen to that, IMO, it's impractical to think that one static setting will work, especially when setting with a test tone. Granted this is where a remote bass knob or sub volume on the HU comes in handy, but I found that I had to turn my gain up farther due to the almost nonexistant bass in some old rock songs that I wanted to hear. I'd set my gain with rap songs, but when I plugged in Def Leppard the bass drum wouldn't be proficient enough even with the sub level maxed out. So I have to know that the sub may reach limits with only +12 out of +15 on my sub level on rap songs.- Building a Subwoofer
oh believe me, two 12s is plenty of headroom in a house. I have two 12s ported to 24 hz I think, off of 500 watts, and it will shake the whole house and knock things over in the bathroom.- Welcome to the IHoP
This week is going to be boring if my boss doesn't give me more work like I requested.- Building a Subwoofer
I say just stick with the Shiva-x. Then you can spend the extra money on trying out new boxes (sealed, ported low, larger box size, etc.) to find the one you really like. Two 12s and 1000 watts will have plenty of output for a normal-sized living room. In fact I doubt you'll ever even use half of their capability while watching movies and things.- Welcome to the IHoP
On my way home from work I saw a semi truck coming towards me in the other lane with white smoke pouring out the back of it. Hmm. As I got closer I could hear a loud EEEEEERRRRRRRRR, then I saw the black lines coming from the rear tires of another semi truck riding piggyback. Then came the smell of burning rubber as I passed by. Ruined tires for forgetting to unlock the axle FTL. By the looks of it he had just pulled out of a driveway about 200' back and he had ripped up lines in the gravel driveway as well.- Best amp for 2 12" Fi Qs
IA 20.1, Sundown 2000 (Or a couple strapped saz-1000s if you can't wait), or US Amps MD3D?- What size speaker wires for Fi 15Q?
Pretty sure that doesn't matter at all. Thanks for not helping yet again. Pretty sure you don't understand wire length and resistance, as mentioned above.- Welcome to the IHoP
Oh sure, the HOP dies after I post in it.- Welcome to the IHoP
THATS WHAT SHE SAID!!!! I watched part of "Employee of the Month" yesterday so Jessica Simpson has been on the brain a little. Then when I thought of looking underneath my Explorer I thought of that line of hers in "Dukes of Hazzard." I found what it was, btw. I think, anyways. A clip that holds three of my leaf springs together had gotten loose. It was as if the springs spread and stretched out the ring and then retracted back together, but the ring was still big. So it just kinda jumps around as I go over bumps. I hammered it tight back off to one side, but I don't really think it'll stay forever. - Noob status i know.
