Running active.
Honestly- i only went active in my zuk to bypass the passive x-over. I have had a few fail on me, from overpowering I am sure, but they failed none the less.

pioneer headunits, subwoofer settings
what they said- i usually find the lowest recorded volume song I listen too(old school majic mike in my case) and set my amp gains with my sub level at 0 , and my remote bass know all the way up...(and bass boost all the way down). Then I turn my remote bass knob down to ~1/2 for most music...and adjust to the song. I rarely go into my sub setting on my deck after the initial setting of the gains.

Best NON - Nav Headunits for SQ?
Are there "SQ" double dins? You always hear Pioneer PRS80 or 99...and there a popular clarion(forget the model) which are all single dins. I woulda love to have found a 2DIN unit the had the processing power of a PRS. (Particularly low/bandpass/high pass x-overs) I just ordered a Pioneer AVH-X5600...it has an 8 band eq, high and low x-over, sub control...pretty much what most of their decks do, but it is 4v preouts.FWIW.

Lee's Avalanche Build
No doubt- I have built a handful of boxes(sealed) when I was young. they weren't pretty- but they worked. I am trying to do pretty(within reason), and much better fitting. I let the dang home depot guy talk me into using plywood, and it warped, it was just all around a snufu on my part. So I am going back to good ole MDF after reading the Birch vs mdf thread on here last week. Should've stuck to what I knew.lol Live and learn. I am still very much a novice at this stuff. ALSO- emailed Singer about options for Alts -- he had suggested a 275 or 350 amp unit, but I had some other questions to help me decide.

Critical Mass
You know- when I was looking at their amp(as a novice)- I was thinking that visually, they don't look any different than any other amp. (as far as connectors, inputs and such) Now their Subs(UL12) does have a look all its own- with the carbon fiber look, and the magnet structure looks wicked, and the component looks cool too- but that is just looks. Glad I wasn't the only one think that was crazy.LOL

Nice install
