  1. Indeed. I'd rather have a good two channels than a mediocre five...
  2. Out of those choices, I'd choose the Extremis. Poly's simply don't have the displacement to keep up (and their much flatter response will go to waste with such a low Xover point anyway). While the Peerless is an excellent driver, again, I'd rather use it in a two-way. And CDT just doesn't compete. I'm using 'digital coax' cables to run my monoblocks without any problems.
  3. They're the ones that designed it, I'd be pretty confident they know what to put it in to make it perform best Tape measure and a calculator.
  4. SVC 16 ohm drivers still have a good use, too bad nobody makes them nowadays.

    'ello
  6. I doubt it'll make a difference.
  7. I could rattle off equipment combos all night long, but here are some good brands to get you looking: Preamplifiers: Audio Research, Conrad Johnson, Adcom, Sonic Frontiers, AES/Cary Audio, Dynaco, Manley, Welborne Labs, Forte Audio, Parasound, NAD, PS Audio, Classe Power amps: Many of the same make excellent matching power amps, of course Speakers: This is really going to depend on personal preference. Vandersteens, B&W's, Magnepans, Lowther, Tannoy, Dynaudio, blah blah...best bet is to get out there and try to narrow down what you like. Turntable: Rega, Technics, VPI, Sota, Michell, Thorens, Linn Sondek...all build quality 'tables.
  8. Neither of those things are indicative of the word "quality". S-Q-L is a compromise, plain and simple, in the context it's used in. Having an overpowering substage is totally different than having a front stage that has earsplitting dynamics, yet stays true to the recording.
  9. You need either powered preamp outputs or a line output converter to convert the speaker level output to line level.
  10. Is there any way to upload multiple pictures at a time?
  11. no...this amp clips hella easy....i mean easy. I can make any amp clip easily, it's just a function of the input voltage

I'm now officially a safe driver in Virginia... now watch, I'll get surrounded by SWAT tonight, just the way these things go
  13. Any amp will do that...
  14. I like the sound of that... Honestly, I'd start hunting Audiogon. You can find some hellaciously good deals on lightly-used gear.
  15. That'd do the job; Rane and DBX also make better quality units. I'd shudder to think about the crossover parts needed for a passive sub Xover, those inductors would be the size of donuts
  16. I've lost count at how many "Av.2" prototypes there have been...
  17. Seeing four of them do 10kW, and then go into protection from broken soft parts without any damage to the amps, was proof enough for me.
  18. Personally, I thought the COMP12 sounded a little better than the CMPX12, but that's a subjective thing...you may think differently. It also has half the power handling of the larger driver.
  19. Parts Express is a dealer for Crown or QSC rackmount amps...I'd look into those. Going to tell you right now, you won't be able to do much for $500, for 5.1 surround. That's the price of the sub amp $3K for a stereo rig is a lot more doable...could go with a nice seperate preamp/power amp, DIY floorstanders, and a decent sub. Might even get some room treatments thrown in.
  20. The installation will make a whole lot more of a difference than what brand you choose.

There's always motor freight, but that costs an arm and a testicle to go anywhere.

I found someone locally that I think may work out... The design I ended up with would be hell to ship anywhere. Actually haven't figured out how to get it in my apartment yet. That's a problem for August

Weight's a killer on my current project too, going with MDF means lugging 150lb enclosures around. 75lbs with ply is looking much more attractive

I saw once where a guy lined the entire interior of the box with river rock Must have weighed a couple hundred pounds, easy...
