Personally I think dual or triple stock alts would be great set up. Factory alts usually have really good output at idle, are very reliable, and can be found on the cheap. Some even with a lifetime warranty.

I do remember reading a good article on SMD too. Go search on there and check it out OP, it gives you some nice feedback as to why the Auto Parts tests are meaningless. You need much more expensive equipment to add a proper load to get true results.
