How do you guys go about breaking your sub in? Do you let it break itself in overtime or do you play a nice tone to help exercise its suspension?

Well I should be receiving my 15" full loaded BL today and I can't wait till I get home to get it so im looking to exercise the suspension so that it can be broken in for the weekends upcoming local comp event.

I play music on it, thats what I did to my BL, I dont know if its fully broken in yet though, its been in and out of my car, but I like to take it easy on my subs at first then after a week or so, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!

I tore a few surrounds back in the day with my old Soundstream SPL 15's , the shop guy told me I needed to break the sub in, thats why I was tearing the surround???

Yea im a bit ruff on my subs at times. I try to take it easy but when you have that craving to get real loud its hard.

I think im going to run it free air at a very low volume on a test tone. However I am not sure whats the best tone frequency to use without screwing my equipment up.

I turn on my stereo, listen for any sound from the woofer. If all clear, then I use it.

Not if you have the right equipment...

No reason to take it easy once you have given it an initial listen to make sure everythings kosher.

you'll notice that the sub will be very stiff out of the shipping box. stiff were that you can barely press it down. what i did to my bl 18" was after it was installed, i played music that had bass at half volume for 2-3 hours. i then slowly increased the volume and played tests tones. now, check the flex of the sub by pressing down on it. if it moves freely and easy like the wack kicker subs straight out of the box, it should be broken in.

Certain subs recommend that you break them in, but I don't believe there's really a need. The surround will soften up a bit, but it wont damage it to crank it up. A lot of spl guys will pop in a new sub right before a competition because they often get higher spl when still stiff. I'd beat on it like a red-headed stepchild. ;)
