why you would want to run a BTL free air?

Free air meaning out in the open with no baffle ?

I am thinking of a volvo s40 and there is limited space, planning on facing the sub towards the driver, mounting it in the trunk where seats fold down in that hole

You mean infinite baffle type. You want to use the trunk as the enclosure and just have a baffle to mount the sub on. Correct?

BTL definitely isnt. We can mod the SSDs and Qs for IB use. We have been doing quite a bit of that lately for the home theater crowd as well as Hybrid Audio/Scott Buwalda SQ camp. Seems to be making a comeback in the SQ circles. I definitely like IB setups, but be advised that you will have even less output than a standard sealed enclosure in many cases. Surface area is king at that point... but then again most trunk cars can fit a pair of 15s and many a pair of 18s in IB.
