So, a friend of mine just got two JL 12W7's...sexy lookin subs. Before he kills my system I am curious, how do these subs stand up. Are they very good subs....SPL, SQ, etc. Tryin to find out before he puts me to far to shame, lol.

Haven't we been over this before?

Some people love them, some don't. I personally don't like the way they sound, they tend to sound bloated to me. There's other subs I'd take over the W7 in its price range, that do a lot better IMO.

Such as, sorry to ask and not being an azz, but I am newer to subs and tryin to find an extremely good sub to compete with him.

Funky Pups.

I thought that was a joke for a second till I googled them. Really never heard of that one, new one for my book, lol.

Such as

Hmm...

Aura NS/MR's, Focal Utopia's, Rainbow Vanadiums, the previous generation of Stereo Integrity Mags (haven't heard the new ones yet).

But something tells me "competing with him" involves farting loudly, so none of those subs would do anything for you...you'd be looking into a more peaky woofer like a BTL or DD 9500 series.

so all he is gonna be good for is SPL, lol, figures. I want a more musical subwoofer. Glad you steered me clear.

That's not really what I said...

You're really interested in a musical sub? Because if so, the drivers I listed would be perfect.

I just read the word "compete" around here and 99% of the time it's someone wanting to "hit" harder than someone else...

yeah, i am lookin for more musical. He was too, but I think he jumped in to quickly and got those subs cause of the way they looked. I listen more to death metal and heavy metal, so things like BTLs and such are of no use really to me. I will def. check out the subs you listed, right now my num.1 choice is FI Q's, but I am open to learning and lookin at other subs.

I have actually heard that sub and could not stand it. Wasn't to impressed with it.

Not that I am defending the XXX, because I am most definitely not; however, really not liking something has to do with the install and not the driver. One of the worst sounding sub setups I have ever heard was a pair of 8W7's, but it was the installers fault and not the w7's at all.

i had a 10w7 it was fun for awhile but i didnt like it, it had plenty of spl, but lacked the sq i wanted, deff over priced tho... the w6 imo sounds alot better and worth its price... look into sound splinter rl-p series awesome sub

The W7 is an accomplished sub, but I never felt it was worth the price asked, largely due to subs that could do pretty much the same thing for a great deal less.

  • 2 weeks later...

w7 is a great sub...i had 10w7 and i can say it was a pretty good LSQ driver from my experience...but i'll agree about the w6s... one of the cleanest subs i've heard...

anyone ever heard a critical mass sub? according to car audio and electronics, it was one of the best tested subs(according to them)

Edited by todd.brust

i'll agree with that after seeing the alpine type X number 2 above the w6v2

and their recent review of a of PG comp sets that are said to be damn near just as good as Seas Lotus and high end Morel...better than a set of rainbows is what they rated these....i find it hard to believe

if u want a sub that pretty does wat a 12w7 does but alot better and will pretty much kill a w7 in output and sound quailty at loud levels( keep in mind all box dependant)

go with a mag12, or even the sound splinter rl-s12(will totally vaporize the w7 in ouput and sq)

even 2 icon 12's will far out due the 12w7 in the same size box...

u also have fi bl and btl that will cruch the w7 in output the fi q will probaly be on the same playing feild but will sound better(box dependant) even my re se12's will murder the 12w7 in sq as far as out put i dont know YET! but i will see once i get another 1200 watts added on

u have options

80

i have 4 13w7 subs right now i had one in a 7cuft enclosure tuned at 70 hz and did a 155 on a term lab. that was with 2 rf bd 1500 amps strapped together. i now have 2 in the sealed jl spec box and they sound excellant. they are the LSQ subs they play low frequencies at high volumes and still have good upper frequency response the w6's are the spl sub. by the way i am selling them just so i can get 18's the 13's are too small for my van.

That really has nothing to do with it. You can pretty much adapt any driver to suit your musical tastes by application.

are you refering to the old w6s? the new ones are in no way comparable in output to the w7 when used in similar applications

i call bs on tuning a w7 at 70 hz. why would you do that for a non spl app with a non spl sub??
