So I got bored today and decided to test the Nightshades limits.. it was taking every note solid @ 1500watts without even breaking a sweat... So I droped it down to .5, lowered the gains a lil bit... testing it at typical music levels seemed to do pretty good.. a lil stress but nothing serious... put on Burning Up Chopped in Screwed... pretty much flexed the piss out of the car for 15 seconds and it started smelling bad... turned it down real quick. Put it back to 2ohms... played fine for a little and then gave out. Sooo Jacob any type of specialized recone I can get =D? I ripped her apart to find this...

Yep. That = coil coming out the gap and knocking the windings off.

What size and coil configuration ? Do you want to keep using the 3000 watts ?

Yea thats what I figured what happened. I actually put my hand on the sub right after I turned it off and it was only luke warm. That song is just nasty though... basically a solid 26hz note.

And a 15" D2 recone.... I'd like to give it the power if it I can get something that will handle it fine.. what are my options?

Hmmm... D2 coils might take a bit longer for the extended length coil.

Let me see what I can do on that - I have some extended length D1 coils coming in already, let me see if I can get D2 coils.

Basically... we'll use a longer coil and an extra spider.

Yep, the motor will take either coil.

I'll be able to do the D1 coil sooner. I have some of those on the way for testing (small Qty, but enough for you to get one).

I mean the actual windings are longer by about 1/2" so you won't be able to jump the gap even with 3kw, especially not with the extra spider. May even sneak in another option for you too

Longer coil will become standard in the future. Even though @ 1500 watts the current coil is MORE than adequate. As Chad demonstrated in his testing he was even able to do long burps @ 4500 watts with the current coil at box tuning - so it really does take alot to exceed the limits of the current design.

Running at the rated 1500-watts the current spider setup is best - only those who want to exceed that need the extra spider(s). It would hurt performance for the average customer buying these to run them on a 1500D to make a 4th spider standard.

Also... with just the longer coil it'll be almost impossible to get the coil out of the gap with 3 spiders even with a bunch of power Thats *alot* of extra length.

Well that song was played in my buddies box, 2.75cubes @ 29hz. My box is 4.5 cubes @ 31hz. I probally wouldn't of attempted it in my box, but I still got that 6th order I need to build =D

Indeed - in the small box the re-coned driver shouldn't have an issues at all.

The larger box I might question, I'll be able to tell you in more detail after I've done more research and testing with the longer coil - standard stuff before changing anything permanently in the line.

No, there is plenty of room with the 75mm tall magnet stack.

that 6th order bandpass should have more cone controll...but still be carefull

your deffinatly not the first person to junp the gap I did it probably a month ago I reconed them with the standard stuff and its OK tho I could of probably gotten the longer coil and extra spider but it wasnt an option then. the next recones Jacob is building me now but thats a completely diffrent project they will have at least a 4th spider and probably the longer coil I run the nightshades at 3K daily
