componet comparison = heft prict tag and lots of time/equiptment and it still couldnt be fair.

All the woofers you mentioned are over $300.

The ampilfier power to run them, over $300

The enclosures built for them...depends on the wood.

A RTA is much cheaper than a TL

I have an RTA, Full Spectrum Analyzer, a Bruel & Kjaer mic, and access to a Laser Scanning Vibrometer whenever I want. You don't have to buy a dumb TL or RTA, just come here.

I told thilo you had some fancy equipment avaliable to you but i forgot what it was.

He sounded intrested

You guys are NUTS!!!

Of course, best transient measurement device you can pretty much buy for testing speakers. Subs need it less though. If you think BL measurement devices have a real response it ain't nothin'.

I do acoustic and vibration consulting work.

Interesting. If you don't mind, i've got a few questions...

What type of applications does this apply to? Is this accoustics in theaters, vibration and stress analysis on buildings or what? I'm intrigued.

Applications I could go on for hours on, but they almost all require a great deal of explanation to make sense so I will give you a sample.

Measuring location dynamics. The biggest application for this is the tracking of read-write heads flying on hard drive discs. To give you an idea, you can't touch them and the "tone arm" of the hard drive has to be accurate to way better than 2nm, since that is the track spacing. (nm = 9 zeros).

Structural dynamics and modal analysis. Basically the science of measuring where materials bend, how much, and to what stresses this will cause. We do this for any frequencies, thus the need for an FFT analyzer that goes from near DC to 30MHz. Where I live we don't do a whole lot of automotive, this is HUGE in Detroit but we do have a lot of critical devices and other structures. You can imagine that no one wants to design a part or device that resonates at frequencies it will regularly be exposed to. Of particular importance to: Aerospace, military, medical devices, recreational vehicles, and microstructure manufacturers--for instance like the MEMS airbag switch which is less than 250 microns in size (micron is 6 zeros).

Acoustic measurements. I'll make this short. Basically if someone makes something that is loud and they don't want it to be, I will help them find out where and why it is loud. To use an example: say a motorcycle manufacturer was trying to pass an acoustics passby test with a new engine and muffler. The DOT says that they can only be 80dbA at 50ft during a WOT pass from 75' rolling start. If the manufacturer measures 84dBA they can't go to market and need to figure out how to reduce the overall volume by 4dBA. This may sound simple like putting on a different pipe, but believe me the last few dB of reduction to pass a test are rarely muffler noise related. The intake, intake resonator regularly dominate above 4500rpms for example.

And pretty much whatever anyone else will pay me to do.

I think Shanna states what I do better, "he is in the MN mafia" which is a much easier explanation.

ok................i am missing it

Thank you for taking the time to write/type that out for me! Shanna's explanation may be easier for you, but not near as interesting for me. :)

If your post is in reference to his long explanation he typed out for me, thats easy to understand. *but maybe thats because my dad is an ME, my brother is a senior in IE, and I'm a soph in EE...*
