You may tell yoruself that your learning by sitting down, but are you really learning or just looking at material? I've found the best way to learn something is to severely screw it up the first time, then fix it.

Doing a little wood work in the garage, pretty boring little table but only $20 versus well over $400.  Will post pics tomorrow when I finish it.  I am waiting for glue to dry.  The guy at the kitchen store asked how I was putting it together and almost chit when I said I was gluing a table together to hold a $2200 grill.  IMO glue>screws and I am too lazy to try and hide all the screws.  There will be a couple bolts holding the shelves on, but the rest is glue and maybe some brads if I can get my gun back from my bro.

A 6-71 Detroit diesel  is 6 cylinders and 71 cubes per. 

The "muffler" on it was actually billed as a "spark catcher".  It is in a big loader that we use.  Its just plain loud and awsome.

Applications I could go on for hours on, but they almost all require a great deal of explanation to make sense so I will give you a sample.

Measuring location dynamics.  The biggest application for this is the tracking of read-write heads flying on hard drive discs.  To give you an idea, you can't touch them and the "tone arm" of the hard drive has to be accurate to way better than 2nm, since that is the track spacing. (nm = 9 zeros). 

Structural dynamics and modal analysis.  Basically the science of measuring where materials bend, how much, and to what stresses this will cause.  We do this for any frequencies, thus the need for an FFT analyzer that goes from near DC to 30MHz.      Where I live we don't do a whole lot of automotive, this is HUGE in Detroit but we do have a lot of critical devices and other structures.  You can imagine that no one wants to design a part  or device that resonates at frequencies it will regularly be exposed to.  Of particular importance to: Aerospace, military, medical devices, recreational vehicles, and microstructure manufacturers--for instance like the MEMS airbag switch which is less than 250 microns in size (micron is 6 zeros).

Acoustic measurements.  I'll make this short.  Basically if someone makes something that is loud and they don't want it to be, I will help them find out where and why it is loud.  To use an example: say a motorcycle manufacturer was trying to pass an acoustics passby test with a new engine and muffler.  The DOT says that they can only be 80dbA at 50ft during a WOT pass from 75' rolling start.  If the manufacturer measures 84dBA they can't go to market and need to figure out how to reduce the overall volume by 4dBA.  This may sound simple like putting on a different pipe, but believe me the last few dB of reduction to pass a test are rarely muffler noise related.  The intake, intake resonator regularly dominate above 4500rpms for example.

And pretty much whatever anyone else will pay me to do.

Damn, Lowes has BB right now for $32 in 3/4. Oak was $31, and my two sheets of oversized MDF were a total of $21.97 today.

I bought this AWESOME Freud finishing blade for the saw. This thing slices through 3/4" MDF like it's styrofoam and leaves the prettiest edge. I've never seen a better edge or used a nicer blade. 40T titanium tipped carbide with some very nice cooling fins and it's only 1/16" thick. To top that off, it was only $20.

Went to Harbor freight to buy some brads, and they had a combination nailer/stapler on sale for $20. Picked that up cuz my Bostitch can only handle 1-5/8" brads max, while this cheapo can go up to 2", and as luck would have it, the ram in my Bostitch broke on me, so I had to use the new one. It never works like that. Irony. . .

Did the one from harbor freight come in the blow molded plastic case ? If it's the same one I got from them. It's actually not to bad. I have had one for about 6 years now, and it's still going strong. I picked up another at a clearance sale they had here recently for $10 . Couldn't pass that up

THis is the first enclosure I've nailed too, and I have cut my asembly time by 60%.  I love it.  Never going back to screws again!
