I remember reading maybe 5 years ago about how Fahrenheit "might" have visited Romer and decided he quite liked his scale for measuring temperature...so he quadrupled the value of the divisions and called it the Fahrenheit scale.

But I think there's about 7 or 8 different stories about how the Fahrenheit scale came into existence.

Rankine (I think that's what it's called) came after Fahrenheit, right?

I got the explanation from my boss, who is of course German, not that it means it is true. Sort of makes sense though.

Yes. I can't remember exactly but I believe zero Rankine is equal to absolute zero...to convert from Rankine to Fahrenheit you subtract something like 460 degrees...to go from Fahrenheit to Rankine, you add 460 degrees...they both use the same size degrees. Rankine wasn't developed until the mid 1800's whereas Fahrenheit came about towards the beginning of the 1700's (1720 something). Romer was developed in 1701.

My mind is built to remember obscurities like this in fields that I love (aka Physics...I've considered switching my major to it) but I might be off on some of that.

Your story could be 100% true. The two most cited stories are:

1. Copying Romer.

2. Using the temperature of his body (which he said was 96 degrees Fahrenheit) and the coldest temperature in his city.

But there are another 5 or 6 stories that are considered fairly plausible.

I don't know what's up with pre-amps that don't have phono.....very disappointing. Might be tough to find one with XLR AND phono (since XLR is primarily pro-audio and there's not much vinyl used there) but it's possible.

Budget?

just realized you guys were always talking in Metric lol

Tonight will be 34*F (1*C) with Thunderstorms and I'm supposed to be outside again, working out... grrrrrreat

Usually the more advanced do.

:P I'm just a puny american. A stupid southerner as well

Gah how I wish metric system was #1 in school especially at the university level because all other lvls would follow suit

?? I graduated in 96 and we only used the metric system, what backwoods place are you at???

Lamar University AKA Harvard on the Neches

But I don't really think any of the other colleges in the area do straight metric.

Don't get me wrong metric is used a lot (probably more so than English) but I still think there is too much emphasis on the English system. In my Thermodynamics book there was an English section at the end of each problem set (at the end for a reason?? I think so) and all it did was make things harder than they should be because things required some stupid ass conversions.

Can I buy a metric roll out tape measure somewhere?

I was thinking about going with a separate phono pre until the deal came up on the ARC that I really couldn't say no to...and it had a built in one. But I like the idea of moving phono to its own thing.

I'm pretty sure ARC makes an XLR version of my preamp (or whatever the latest model currently is), but you probably won't like the price...I sure wouldn't...
