I too can't say that I have had a very good experience with my truck. Either way before going any further test it by disconnecting your newly attached wires and see if the gauge starts working.
As for the gains being off, if you don't hear distortion don't worry but do beware at higher volume to make sure you don't create issues.

ok, on the wires which end should I disconnect? Like is it safe to leave the + alt. attached and disconnect it from the + battery or should it be the other way around? and on the grounds, should I disconnect from the chassis or from the electrical source? Or should I just take the time to remove them all together?

I'll just keep the volume down until my o-scope arrives to be safe

Acutally, my new check from the university will not go to a TV, it shall go to a bigass PE order. Party speakers is my next quest. I want something that'll sound just downright mean, and I think I know what to do. It should be relatively cheap too, albeit the two speakers will take 5 sheets of ply to build. High power, plus high efficiency 12" pro audio driver in a horn type enclosure should be interesting.
Do tell!

If all goes well, should be running by the end of the week.

guess I'll have to put my 8053 on Ebay. I can't believe no one even nibbled on it....that's just sad .

Oh man I've got a funny story for you guys, gather round real quick. So I was at this party last night, you know some friends from work. Anyways there was a girl that is a UA down in the units that was there and she and I had been going back and forth messing with each other(ya know picking fun at each other). Anyways, the night goes on and My friend, her, and myself are sitting on the couch....she is laying across both of us and I have a cup full of a mixed drink. She sits up to say something to me and she pucking smacks the drink out of my hand and right on to her face and all down her shirt. I have never laughed so hard before in my entire life. Then she says, "WHY DID YOU DO THAT?!" I say, "do what???? you were the one that knocked it out of my hand." hahahahahahaha. The sheer look on her face is priceless, think of "my god what the fudge just happened."

I dunno you may not find that funny but god I was almost in tears.
