I'm with sean, go active. I don't even see a point to starting with passives. Won't even help you with the sound except maybe with imaging.

there is very little tuning that you'll have to do to an active setup that you wouldn't have to do to a passive setup. you can always start with generic crossover points, you just have the added flexibility of changing those points

There are tons of options and they will depend on what size drivers, what mounting locations, music preferences, driver material preferences, tuning capability and so on. Lots of factors, but it will be really easy to outdo the Boston's. Personally I wouldn't pay more than $150 for a set of them.
