Only to study the inner workings of the ear you have to rip part of their head off to expose it. They are pretty hardy and actually live for up to 10 hours that way or so. PETA loves the work we do sometimes.

I "get" to help PhD researchers design all sort of implantable hearing devices that allow deaf people to hear, perhaps sacrificing a few lab raised animals is okay and appropriate for that. If you would prefer we could instead pay poor third world country peoples to have their heads cut open. That is what the laser correction eye surgery people did, free testing in Mexico if you ask me that is way fucking worse. Animals that can be used to enable humans to live better, well hell I eat the damn buggers everyday so why not help people with medical deficiencies as well?
