this computer that i've borrowed from my niece sucks ass. Every program on it errors out at some point. It even reboots randomly. It's an asus mb with all the accessories or whatever on the mb itself.

pentium d 3.4 and 1stick of ram (1gig IIRC)

The main HDD is a SATA ~150gig but i threw in an old IDE 100gig i had laying around and did a fresh install of windows xp pro on it...same damn problems started happening on it as well.

at this point i think it has to be bad memory (i ran a few memory diagnostics to no avail)

bad power supply (ppl online were suggesting i needed a very large power supply, the one in it now is like a 350W)

i know next to nothing about this stuff, feel free to correct me or let me know what else you need to know

Has it always had issues or just started it when you got it?

pretty much always did it. didn't do it when she first got it, but quickly developed problems.

Going to sounds dumb, but is the inside dirty or have you given it a good dusting? It could be overheating.

the MB does get warm, i d/l a program to watch that. I tried everything to get it cool but nothing affects it at all. it has a huge CPU fan, right now i'm running it without the covers even on so it can breathe, but the mb still gets warmer than i'd like. especially when running a few programs at once the MB will get to 45-46C

My vote goes for either bad memory or needs a bigger PSU, but I'd bet on the memory.

well when i got it for the niece it ran fine, and when i borrowed it back my sis told me it had been doing all this crap. i discovered that she had the case apart for some reason and the damn wireless card wasn't seated anymore either. i'm betting she had the pucker apart as she loves to think she knows what she's doing. I'm thinking maybe she screwed the memory and didn't want to say anything. It wouldn't really hurt to throw another 1gig stick in anyway, if it's not the problem then she has that much extra memory i guess.

Sometimes my laptop runs fairly warm. Do those external fans that sit in a case and are placed under the laptop work well? I think the problem is the fact that there are 42 processes running all the time.

It could be a power supply or memory problem

Did you try memtest or prime95 ?

How many memory sticks does it have ? If it has one, try to move it in a diffrent slot. If it has 2, try them separately.

just one stick...tried switching slots made no difference. Just found a psu and stick of ram local, 500W PSU for $40 and 1gig of ram for $15 so i'll pick those up, worst case scenario i'm out $55

Yep, they actually do work, and in your case it sounds like it would be a good investment.

$55 may be a lot but if i take it anywhere to have it worked on i'm sure i'll pay twice that at the least.

I have a laptop dock for mine and it does little for heat dissipation. I don't know what you have, but I have a 2.8 P4 and that bitch just sucks up the battery and is ALWAYS running all 3 fans. It never really cools down either. I've had it in twice for a new motherboard after some of the solder joints melted away.

T2300 @ 1.66 GHz - 512 MB RAM

I'll be looking to upgrade it sometime. I don't understand how it really works, but I'd just like to spend a little bit of cash and have some components replaced/added to make it a little faster/more up to date.

The battery life is a weak two hours which is unfortunate. From what I can remember, it has always ran a little warm.

My roommate has one of the cooling pads and it works decently.

I'd put more RAM in it if I was you, 2x 1gig sticks would probably work wonders on it.
