Fender arrived this morning. I have to go to the scrapyard this weekend and cut a quarter panel apart for a patch panel, then fix the door, and it'll be ready for paint. Once I get it painted, I think I'm going to take a trip to the local Bimmer spot and see how close I can get to the 135i with the Cobra and V6.

I just wish they had one in stock so I can actually see how big the damn thing is. I would like a sedan for the extra two doors, but I just need something with a larger trunk that I can fit all my tools in and still have room for a stroller or something. The Mustang has no trunk. I can get my tools in there now, but nothing else.

I've been looking at this, but not so sure I want to give up two cars for it., and I don't particularly care for the saddle interior.

That is the car we bought for Amanda, except forest metallic green and darker tan interior then the one you linked. Very solid car, rides, corners, and cruises smoothly. Not sure it will have enough forward thrust for your tastes, because I know I wish ours did. The I-6 will do you solid and run awesome. I kind want a 6 speed 530i, but I don't need that large a car at this point. So used manual 330i wagon is on the top of the list for me.

Maybe my folks will listen if I recommend a BMW wagon to replace the POS Volvo that they've been trying to find a way to get rid of

They're in the trap of "it's a BMW, so it must be expensive" thinking, when I know they've dumped more money in that V70 than a 330i would cost to keep running well...and it was by no means a deal to buy in the first place.

Oh well, time to be productive I guess...buy some books that I need, get signed up for a summer class...a nap will be on the menu, I'm sure...

Tell them to get on the net and do some research. If they wanted something that was cheaper to maintain, they never would have purchased a Volvo in the first place. Of course these vehicles are going to be more expensive than their American or Japanese counterparts. There aren't as many of them on the road. They should know this as it's just common sense. You will be surprised however, that the German cars, at least in my research, are not far off in maintenance costs.

Of course I may just be used to paying higher prices for parts. You wouldn't think a Cobra is much different from a regular Mustang, but when you mention the Cobra part, you can automatically add a hundred for the parts.

If I go this route, I'd probably keep the V6 and tinker with it. I don't really even drive the Cobra (I've only put about 300 miles on it the past 3 years), so I'm not so worried about speed. Keep in mind my past two daily drivers have been a Taurus with 150K on the clock and a worn out/underpowered 3.8L Mustang. If I need a speed fix, it's easy to get though.

Guess I should go back to work now.

don't get me wrong, turbo cars can be reliable, but they're the exception, not the rule

I would tend to agree. Turbo's can be a pain, I like the mileage for power ration. I just like to hear otheres opinions.

Over the years, it was heat or part failure. But I have not had the money or friends that owned a recent vehicle that was turbo. Don't get me wrong, I helped work on a few Audi/VW 1.8T's and got some nice power out of them, but power delivery was not that linear. Way back when, my Merkur's engine block could take all the forced induction you could afford, but the heat under hood was always an issue.

Newer models with turbo's have allot less problems it seams to me. I'm skeptical of the turbo myself, and I'm looking at getting a new car this next year.

I love turbo's. The only turbo vehicles I have delt with are the International (Ford) 7.3 Diesel, both of which I loved with no turbo problems, except for the computer won't except more than 25lbs of boost and puts the truck into a defueling mode

About every part of me wants to keep my EC 90 model Chevy so when I get out of college I can lift it about 3" (2wd) rebuild the engine, maybe stroke it to 383, and add a SC to it. I know engine cost alone would probably be about 4K (w/o labor) and i need around 1K in body work and paint. Sludge and overkill the interior, put descent size tires on it and have a really fun beach truck.

I don't think the cost of the parts themselves is what's the killer part, it's the fact that car has next to no reliability, ironically it's a turbo but the engine is the only thing in it that works without a problem ...I'm not sure if it's due to the redesigns they've had lately after Ford bought them, but they're a far cry from the old, boxy ones.
